In the past three decades immigration and immigrant integration have become increasingly politicized issues in Western Europe. Simultaneously the rise of far right parties have significantly altered the political landscape. This study enhances the understanding of the relationship between far right parties and the potential extent of immigrant integration. It uses the cases of Sweden, primarily focusing on the role of the Sweden Democrat party and Germany, focusing on the Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland. I use process tracing, a qualitative research method, to identify the maximal causal analysis between the presence of far right parties measures through their electoral success and use of anti-immigrant, xenophobic, and anti-multiculturalism rhetoric to determine if there were any shifts in integration policy that would affect the potential extent of immigrant integration. To measure shifts in integration I primarily use MIPEX which identifies shifts in integration in eight areas of policy indicators. Additionally, there is an examination of narratives of national identity, immigration policy history, and the role of the center right in government. These allow for an informed examination of current policies and their shifts and shifting narratives of national-identity. My findings suggest that integration policies are not significantly altered by the electoral popularity or hardline rhetoric of far right parties. However, recent success could disrupt this trend as center-right parties are under increasing pressure to moderate their stances of integration to appeal to their electorate. There seems to be a difference between a party\u2019s popularity and their access to power, which seems to have more of an effect on integration policies. This is significant because it develops a clearer picture of the increasing importance of far right parties in the European political landscape as they continue to reach new heights of electoral success. It also develops a clearer understanding of the effect of their rhetoric on integration policy, which shapes the ways in which migrants can participate in their society. Overall, it demonstrates that the far right\u2019s influence on integration policy remains more limited than it may typically be considered.<\/p>\n

Taking place during the Cold War between the United States and the U.S.S.R, The Red Scare and The Lavender Panic are characterized as mass moral hysteria, changing the perception of social and educational loyalties. With rising tensions surrounding the fear of communism, and the threat of Nuclear War, teachers and educators suffered intense scrutiny. The government deployed tactics to test the loyalty of educators and federal employees, even going so far as to constitute them as security risks. As educators and teachers struggled to prove their loyalty, confidentiality, and patriotism, LGBTQAI+ workers also found themselves on the chopping block for the same reasons. Ultimately, the effects of America\u2019s anti-communism movement pushed for censorship and a question of loyalty, security, and identity. Maye"},"content":{"rendered":" Building upon previous scholarship analyzing the relationship between public opinion and Supreme Court legitimacy, this project investigates under what conditions policy impacts diffuse support of the Court. I compare reactions to the Court under two conditions: judicial activism and judicial restraint. Previous research suggests that policy impacts specific support of the Court, but it is unclear whether it impacts diffuse support. This project argues that policy does impact diffuse support, but only when the Court is judicially activist, as policy motivations of justices are more visible to the public. For my activist case study, I analyzed the Hughes Court (1930-1941). For my restrained case study, I researched the Vinson Court (1946-1953). I used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to examine this relationship. For my qualitative methods, I analyzed work by contemporary scholars of the Court for each time period, looking to see if they took policy into consideration when evaluating the Supreme Court. For my quantitative work, I analyzed public opinion data sets from 1939 and 1954, running a series of linear regressions to determine if the relationship between policy and diffuse support is statistically significant under both conditions. Qualitative analysis revealed that individuals under both conditions used policy as a lens to understand the Court through, but while it was the main lens during the activist Hughes Court, it was one of many lenses used to understand the Vinson Court. However, these efforts frequently prioritized the interests of wealthier, predominantly white populations. This project examines East Liberty, a historically vibrant neighborhood in Pittsburgh, to show that urban planners\u2019 focus on modernization through large-scale clearance, the construction of high-rises, a pedestrian mall, and confusing traffic reconfigurations displaced Black and low-income residents and disrupted existing social and economic networks. Drawing on historical accounts, planning documents, and scholarly research, this study demonstrates how these policies disrupted local economies, displaced residents, and weakened longstanding social networks. Rather than achieving equitable growth, urban renewal initiatives in East Liberty contributed to economic decline and social fragmentation. VanHoorelbeke"},"content":{"rendered":" This project investigates the complicated relationship between the medieval concept of chivalry and the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Medieval chivalry was a nebulous concept. It constantly changed and adapted to meet changes in society, warfare, and culture as the war progressed. I examine the role chivalry played in how battles were fought, how peace was made, and how it determined the outcome of interactions between the highest members of both soldiery and society. Ultimately I prove that chivalry had an impact during the war as it affected the outcome of certain battles and, conceptually, was deeply embedded into almost every level of medieval aristocratic society during the period of war. In order to prove this, I analyze the ever-present but constantly various and inconsistent definitions of chivalry throughout the broader medieval period and how they relate to the war. I will also investigate the life and contemporary chivalric biography of the French Marshal Jean II Le Mangrie, so that I can understand how personal chivalry functions both at an individual level, and to form a more ground up approach, using one of the most important and high ranking individuals from the war. Lastly, I will investigate how the concept of chivalry was deeply embedded in aristocratic life during the period of war. Gibson"},"content":{"rendered":" This project analyzes the legal and economic significance of femme sole<\/em> status in late medieval England, roughly from 1300-1500, focusing on whether the status conferred onto singlewomen, widows, and married women trading sole a consequential amount of autonomy in a society where coverture put notable constraints on women\u2019s economic and legal agency. These constraints rendered married women unable to enter contracts or litigation in their own rights. However, there were certain places which permitted married women to register as femme sole, gaining these rights back. This was for economic purposes; it did not serve as a challenge to patriarchal authority but rather as protection for commerce and male property. Femme sole status was geographically limited in scope, could cause women to experience higher vulnerability in debt litigation, and was merely one factor in the determination of legal agency a woman could receive. This project examines case law, custumals, and historiography to show that even when women used legal maneuverability to and status to participate and work around the system, that system was still shaped by male authority. I am not here to claim that the Jewish reading of Kafka\u2019s work is the definitive one, nor to attempt that it was secretly intended as Jewish. But I wanted to write a project that acknowledged and discussed Kafka\u2019s very nuanced, complex, and somewhat troubled relationship with his own Jewishness\u2014as well as his political Zionism\u2014in the backdrop of the early 20th century in which he lived, and to marry that with these various readings of The Metamorphosis that focus on its Jewish themes not merely in themes, but in storytelling techniques as well. It is my firm belief that Kafka\u2019s Judaism is deeply important to his existence as a person, yet outside of certain academic circles it is rarely discussed or brought up. Michaels"},"content":{"rendered":" This project dives into the nuances of sports history, specifically the value of professional, and amateur players, throughout the history of the game of Olympic basketball. I focus on the eight year time period between 1984-1992. This time period would have a very influential historical actor to my research in Michael Jordan. Jordan would compete as both an amateur and professional in the Olympics and would leave an ever lasting legacy within the game of Olympic basketball, and basketball as a whole. Throughout my project I go into detail about players NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) and how the value of players NIL evolved overtime. Pitko"},"content":{"rendered":" In 1956 under President Eisenhower\u2019s administration, the Federal-Aid Highway Act officially went into effect and marked the beginning of transformation with interstate construction nationally. Planning for Interstate 680 in Youngstown, Ohio began in 1952 and construction lasted until 1976, clearing out ethnic Slovak working class neighborhoods in Lansingville and other important, previously established, community spaces, like Pine Hollow Park, in its path. This Senior Project investigates the destruction done to the Lansingville community leading to decreases in general community connectivity and area population, while also seeking to understand how memories have both aided and failed in immortalizing the importance of a once tight knit neighborhood. This project also focuses on documented accounts of I-680\u2019s construction and how other historians have analyzed the depletion of Lansingville\u2019s community and community memory due to the freeway.
