Allegheny College, a small selective national liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of Chief of Staff. The position is a full-time exempt position reporting to the President. The Office of the President administers all aspects of the Allegheny community through direct reports from the senior leadership and reports directly to the Board of Trustee.
The Chief of Staff reports to the President and serves as a member of her senior staff and trusted advisor and contributes to strategic institutional discussions and planning. They provide thoughtful partnership, input, and resources to the president and senior leadership team, in addition to serving as a liaison for the president with other administrative leaders and staff. The Chief of Staff plays an active role in moving the president’s strategic priorities forward and also helps manage essential projects and initiatives across campus and with outside communities and agencies to ensure they are completed. The Chief of staff will be a strategic and innovative thinker who must also be a collaborative leader within the president’s executive team.
The Chief of staff will work under the direction of the president, provide comprehensive and confidential project management in support of the College’s mission and more specifically the president’s priorities, and work with campus leadership as required to oversee the successful completion of complex, high-priority projects. Represent the views of the president with internal and external constituents, including but not limited to students, parents, alumni, friends, community foundations and local government. Respond on behalf of the president when designated to inquiries from, and/or issues involving, the above constituencies. Act as a designee in the absence of the president to represent Allegheny College as needed. Develop and review strategies to ensure College projects align with the strategic plan and desired outcomes. Oversee future campus-wide strategic planning process and implementation of the finalized strategic plan; establish and maintain dashboard of key metrics for informing faculty, staff, and Trustees. Prepare annual report card on progress of the plans goals. Conduct research studies on college management practices, assemble and analyze benchmarking data and make recommendations for improving college operations. Coordinate communications and events for the President with various units. Play a major role in ensuring that the administrative leaders are aligned with one another and communicating both amongst themselves and with the community. Work with the president to strategically manage her time. This includes acting as a gatekeeper to ensure her involvement in projects or decision-making takes place at key times where input and authority are needed.
Relevant post-baccalaureate degree required, doctorate preferred with a minimum of 10 years of related professional experience required with special consideration for experience in higher education administration. Must have demonstrated success in working in a team management system. Committed to the liberal arts mission. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced and politically sensitive environment. Adept interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a broad range of individuals internally and externally, to work under pressure and to manage multiple deadlines/projects.
