Counselor / Therapist

Allegheny College, a small selective national liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of Counselor/Therapist.  The position is a full-time, 11-month, exempt position reporting to the Clinical Director/Director of the Counseling and Personal Development Center.  The Counseling and Personal Development Center provides brief individual and group counseling for Allegheny College students. Our counselors are approachable, empathetic, and willing to grow and learn with needs of our student population.

This position supports the campus-wide mental health and wellness education, and prevention initiatives while also serving the personal and psychological needs of students through counseling, psychoeducation, referral, and support services. Allegheny College is seeking a diversity-focused clinician who will provide inclusive mental health support through therapy and outreach programming for students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Clinical or Counseling Psychology. In addition, the candidate should possess the following:

  • Licensed, license eligible, or actively working towards licensure in Pennsylvania (must be obtained within 1 year of hire).
  • 2+ years of experience in mental health counseling/therapy.
    • Experience in individual therapy is required; group therapy experience is desired.
    • Experience with a young-adult population.
  • Specialization in serving diverse populations, including, but not limited to, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of identity development, gender and gender non-conformist philosophy, and concepts of intersectionality, racial trauma, social justice, and civic engagement.
  • A proven track record of building strong relationships across a wide range of constituencies, including students, faculty, divisional staff, administrative colleagues, alumni, parents, and members of the surrounding community.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and/or leading programming, trainings, presentations, or workshops is desired.
  • A collegial, friendly, flexible, and collaborative approach to student development, leadership, and campus culture.
  • Experience in crisis and risk management and overseeing the resolution of complex student issues.
  • A commitment to shared governance and sensitivity, fairness, compassion, empathy, objectivity, and transparency in decision-making.


  1. Provide individual brief therapy and group counseling with students experiencing personal / social / family / mental health and related concerns.
  2. Consult with students, parents, faculty, and administrators on matters related to the Counseling and Personal Development Center Office.
  3. Refer and connect students with resources on and off-campus.
  4. Attend and participate in regular supervisions with director and meetings with colleagues.
  5. Conduct diagnostic assessments, triages, and return to campus assessments.
  6. Provide crisis intervention for students with mental health concerns.
  7. Build relationships and strong collaborations within Student Life and across the institution.
  8. Participate in departmental and divisional meetings and committees as needed.
  9. Occasional evening hours may be requested for programming and groups or may be required in the event of an emergent mental health situation.
  10. Develop and implement programming and training by presenting workshops, lectures, and public information sessions to the College community.
  11. Operate within ethical codes (ACA or other applicable to licensure), Pennsylvania laws, Allegheny College and CPDC specific procedures, as well as FERPA and HIPAA policies. This includes maintenance and punctual completion of paperwork.
