RISE students will live in single rooms in the same residence hall!<\/div><div class=\"column-short column-one-third    \">\n<h3 class=\"alt\">Development<\/h3>Through RISE, students will make lifelong friends, develop stronger academic skills, and will be prepared to thrive at Allegheny and graduate in four years.<\/div><div class=\"column-short column-one-third   column-last  \">\n<h3 class=\"alt\">Knowledge<\/h3>In the fall semester, RISE students will initiate personalized development plans, with the guidance of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion professional staff, of Inclusive Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusive Excellence (IE) is a strategic approach and core value that comprehensively links diversity and quality and prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion work at the core of the institution\u2019s functioning. Sustained commitment to IE leads to educational benefits and stronger outcomes for students and strengthens the broader campus community.\u00a0 Defining IE at Allegheny is a critical step in actualizing the College\u2019s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In Spring 2020, the Office of Diversity, Equity, &amp; Inclusion and the Council on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) circulated a survey to gather input from the Allegheny community to determine a tailored definition of IE at Allegheny based on four primary elements of IE identified by AAC&amp;U (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/mei\/williams_et_al.pdf\"><em>Making Excellence Inclusive<\/em><\/a>) . CoDE then used this information to draft four \u201cTenets of Inclusive Excellence\u201d for Allegheny College:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Intentionally focusing on intellectual, social, and civic development, by offering a curriculum \u00a0 and co-curricular opportunities that are infused with a range of disciplines and perspectives. We work to implement an educational experience that contributes to critical thinking, knowledge, and holistic development for all community members.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fostering a rich environment of learning, belonging, and self-exploration where all community members feel a sense of belonging and the opportunity to thrive. We do this through a purposeful development and utilization of organizational resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Recognizing and valuing the diverse cultural and intellectual experiences and perspectives that each individual brings to the Allegheny community to enhance the overall educational enterprise and work environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Creating and maintaining a welcoming, diverse community that values and celebrates intentional engagement across difference in all sectors and at all levels of the institution.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Key Definitions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Diversity: Range of similarities and differences individuals bring to a particular setting or community.<\/li>\n<li>Equity: The pursuit of fairness; giving all individuals access to the tools and resources they need in order to thrive.<\/li>\n<li>Inclusion:The process of creating a culture and environment that recognizes, appreciates, and effectively utilizes the talents, skills, and perspectives of every individual.<\/li>\n<li>Equity Minded-ness: Commitment to action to address college wide inequities; Assuming responsibility for the elimination of inequity; Awareness about equity gaps within different areas of an institution.<\/li>\n<li>Inclusive Excellence: The presence of diversity, equity, inclusion, and equity-mindedness across every area of the College. to advance and increase awareness of issues of diversity and equity at Allegheny; to facilitate communication and discussion among members of the campus community on issues of diversity and equity; and to make policy recommendations to the Provost of the College, Faculty Council, and the Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<h4>Global Education<\/h4>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/internationalprograms\/\">\u00a0Global Education<\/a>\u00a0office is\u00a0committed to the internationalization of Allegheny College by assisting students and faculty going overseas, assisting students who are interested in national study programs and providing services to international students, faculty and scholars and helping them integrate into campus and community life.<\/p>\n<h4>IDEAS Center<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/ideas\/\">IDEAS Center<\/a> is the social\/emotional brave space providing support and validation of the experiences of under-resourced student populations. The center also provides a gathering place for dialogue and support surrounding the concerns of inclusion, diversity, equity, access and social justice.<\/p>\n<h4>Spiritual &amp; Religious Life<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/religiouslife\/\">Spiritual and Religious Life<\/a> Office provides spiritual guidance and fellowship for students of any faith or of none. Weekly Christian, Jewish, and Muslim ritual opportunities are offered on campus, as well as resources for Buddhist, Hindu, Pagan, and secular students. Students of different faiths or who have an interest in religion come together in our Interfaith Fellowship. Requests for IDI assessments and intercultural development plans can be directed to Veronica Dantan at vdantan@allegheny.edu.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Sustained Dialogue Institute (SDI)<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Overcoming Challenging Moments in the Classroom&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThis workshop is an opportunity for faculty to learn inclusive classroom strategies, dive into several aspects of identity, and learn to manage difficult moments in the classroom related to a variety of social identities. (This year will build on last year&#8217;s workshop &#8220;Faculty as Skilled Facilitator&#8221;. However, attendance at the previous workshop is not required.)<\/p>\n<p>The workshop is being developed by Alice Deckert, Ishita Sinha Roy, and Ande Diaz. The workshop will be will be conducted by a consultant from the Sustained Dialogue Institute. Included in the workshop we will practice various effective communication strategies and problem solving skills. The discussions will be facilitated by Prof. Eleanor Weisman and Prof. Bill Bywater You will receive a copy of Dr. Derald Sue&#8217;s book &#8220;Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence:\u00a0 Understanding and Facilitating Difficult Dialogues on Race&#8221; that will provide the backbone for our discussion.\u00a0 There are spaces for ten employees and eight students. Students will receive academic credit. Employees will gain new knowledge and skills.
