Al Akhawayn University (AUI) is located in the city of Ifrane in Morocco. Ifrane, which is nestled in the beautiful Middle Atlas Mountains, has a growing population of about 15,000 people. Because of its remarkable European architecture style, Ifrane is nicknamed “Little Switzerland”. The landscape in the area offers mountains, parks, waterfalls, cedar and oak forests, and rich wildlife, making it a big attraction for people who enjoy outdoor activities year round. In addition to outdoor pursuits, restaurants, cafes, hotels, nightlife, a weekly market, bazaars, hammams, campgrounds, and other diverse amenities make Ifrane a pleasant place to live and study. Ifrane is one hour from the imperial cities of Fez and Meknes, two and a half hours from the Moroccan capital Rabat, and three and a half hours from Casablanca.
Al Akhawayn University is an independent, public, not-for-profit, coeducational university for the education of students through an English-language, liberal-arts curriculum. The fall semester goes from late August until mid-December while the spring semester goes from late January until mid-May. Al Akhawayn University’s student body is of a little over 2000 students – from at least 25 different countries – who are pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. AUI offers 7 undergraduate programs and 13 graduate programs from 3 different schools: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The School of Business Administration, and The School of Science and Engineering.
2.75 cumulative GPA and junior class standing is required.
Allegheny students must first be approved to study off-campus before applying to their chosen program. Application deadlines are February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. The University offers 19 gender specific residence halls. All rooms are heated and furnished. The rooms are equipped with a telephone set, a TV set, and have Internet access. Housing options ranges from triple rooms to single studios. At Al Akhawayn University, there are 5 main different restaurants: Cafeteria, Moroccan & International restaurant, Grill, Pizzeria, and Club House. With different opening hours and offerings, the student body gets to choose between grab-and-go meals and made-to-order pizzas, sandwiches, and steak. The Student Activities Office (SAO) at AUI is the central entity that coordinates between the numerous clubs and student-run organizations that engage in cultural, educational, social and recreational activities. The SAO also takes part in organizing the new students’ orientation and various events throughout the year, such as concerts, theater plays, karaoke nights, and talks.
Students are charged Allegheny tuition, a $300.00 off campus study fee, Allegheny double room rate and the complete meal plan. Allegheny aid is applied to the program costs. Additional costs include international airfare, international travel insurance as well as national insurance of Morocco, personal expenses (passport, residency permit and airport shuttle fee), textbook expenses and housing deposit.
