Why is the Mathematics Department making these changes?
Our primary goal is to improve success rates in our calculus and precalculus courses.
All of the new courses will be taught three days per week, which should improve student workload and scheduling difficulties resulting from the current 4dayperweek calculus courses Math 160, 170, 210.
The new Calculus II (Math 152) will cover “multivariable differential calculus” (a welcome change to other departments on campus) and postpones “sequences and series” to a later course.
How will I complete my major or minor if a required calculus course will no longer be taught?
No student will be left unable to complete their desired major and minor.
The Mathematics Department has worked closely with other departments on campus to ensure a smooth transition to the new curriculum, including appropriate course substitutions. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor to discuss any required mathematics courses they still need to complete, as well as the recommended substitutions.
Students who still need to take Math 158 (Calculus II for Social/Life Sciences) or Math 210 (Calculus III), and who meet the required prerequisites, are strongly encouraged to take these courses the last semester they will be offered, in Fall 2019.
