Nicaragua–a land of volcanoes, conflicts, and significant health disparities. EL participants in the Nicaragua seminar will gain an understanding of how key events in the history of Nicaragua have affected the culture resulting in a variety of social issues facing Nicaraguans, especially those who lack access to adequate health care. This EL seminar is an international service-learning course, including a 14-day immersion experience in Nicaragua and will be led by the Gateway Directors Kirsten Peterson and Jim Fitch. While in Nicaragua, students will work at “Project Chacocente,” a resettlement project for families previously living in Managua’s garbage dump. In addition, there will be a series of lectures on course-related topics by experts or scholars in Nicaragua. The second 2018 Nicaragua EL Seminar Information Session takes place on Wednesday, October 4, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Steffee B-102.
This course will require participation in a minimum of three two-hour seminars held during spring semester and approximately 15 hours of service with the annual Gators Give Back Rummage Sale. Familiarity with the Spanish language is encouraged but not required. Please contact Kirsten Peterson (kpeterso@allegheny.edu) or Jim Fitch (jfitch@allegheny.edu) with any questions.
