Auditions for “Denied Admission” will be held Sunday, April 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. in 107 Vukovich Center for Communication Arts. No preparation is necessary. Performers will be asked to read from the script. Auditioners representing diversity and those who are Spanish-speakers are especially welcomed and encouraged. “Denied Admission” is a new play based on credible fear interviews of asylum seekers who crossed the southern U.S. border. Credible fear is a concept in United States asylum law whereby a person who demonstrates that he or she has a credible fear of returning to his or her home country cannot be subject to deportation from the United States until the person’s asylum case is processed. The work’s deviser is Katie Beck of Akron’s Gum-Dip Theatre.

Four to six Allegheny students will work with Katie remotely across summer 2019 to continue devising “Denied Admission.” In fall 2019, the company will meet to rehearse across two weeks. “Denied Admission’ will be presented by the Playshop Theatre in the Gladys Mullenix Black Theatre September 13–14.

Following her 2014 graduation from Allegheny, Katie founded Gum-Dip Theatre in her native Akron. Gum-Dip’s mission is to celebrate, challenge, and invent community identity in the Rust Belt. The Playshop Theatre is delighted to welcome Katie and her company back to Meadville.
