Jennifer Foreman, assistant professor in psychology, will discuss “Beyond Captions: Making Learning Accessible Through Universal Design” in Campus Center 301/302 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 11. Universal Design originated in the fields of architecture and design during the 1970s, with its proponents seeking to increase accessibility of buildings, tools, and public spaces for individuals with disabilities. Over recent decades, educators have adapted these principles to create a curricular and instructional framework — Universal Design for Learning — that accommodates the needs of students with physical and cognitive differences. This lecture explores the history, theory, and practical implications of Universal Design for Learning and allied frameworks such as the Neurodiversity movement, with an emphasis on how these frameworks can be applied to teaching and learning situations.
