The Allegheny College Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Professor James Niblock, will present their fall concert on Saturday, December 7, at 3:15 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium. All five of the College’s choirs will perform with over 125 singers from the student body, faculty, and surrounding community. The concert is free and open to the public.

Student soloists will share their talents in several pieces, and student percussionists and other collaborators will join the choirs as well. Allegheny’s Teacher of Guitar, Jim Froman, will accompany the College Choir in a charming setting of the Mexican Christmas carol “El Rorro.” Likewise, Ward Jamison and Kevin Dill will accompany the choirs from the piano in works ranging from Faure’s sublime “Cantique de Jean Racine” to the Taiwanese tune “Gao Shan Qing” in which piano stylings are inspired by the pipa, a Chinese stringed instrument.
The program promises an array of musical delights with music sung in eight languages and sources spanning five centuries. If you’ve seen the beautiful harvest-themed posters for this event hanging around campus, you’ll be pleased to connect the painting by Washington artist Steve Henderson with the poetry of Robert Frost in “A Girl’s Garden” – yet another work with a dazzling piano accompaniment performed by Dill. Choral classics such as Palestrina’s “Sicut cervus” and Randall Thompson’s “The Last Words of David” will mix with newer compositions and arrangements from around the world. The choirs will perform several selections on holiday and seasonal themes as well. Alumni and current members of the Choirs are invited to join in the traditional singing of the “Nunc dimittis” and Alma Mater in the stairwell following the concert.
