Interested in film studies, ethnic studies, or the Asian American experience? In Module 2, Spring 2022, the topic for WLC 390 Special Topics is Asian American Film and Video, which takes place at 1:30–3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a 4-credit course. It studies Asian American films and stories as a genre closely tied to political and social events and issues from the early 20th century to the present. By investigating representations of Asians and Asian Americans in the genre, students catch a glimpse of Asian American history — immigration, assimilation, and struggle against institutional racism, locate the themes, styles, and perspectives, and grasp the complexity of intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality. While the course primarily focuses on interpreting and discussing existing movies/video, students are encouraged to create their own personal stories using various forms of digital media as the final project for the course.

No prerequisites for the class. If you are interested in film studies, ethnic studies or the Asian American experiences, this course would be for you. Simply find WLC-390 Special Topics in the course catalogue and then sign up for it. If you have any questions, please contact Professor Xiaoling Shi at xshi@allegheny.edu.
