ENG 360: Cultural History of the English Language, FALL 2022, Tues/Thurs 9:30-10:45 am. This course focuses on the external and internal elements involved in English Language change. The theme of “Invasion, Invention, and Identity” unifies the course and characterizes the kinds of events that exerted pressures and affected change on the English language, beginning with Old, Middle, and Early Modern English and moving into Modern English(es) and dialects. We also explore Global English and “endangered” languages, the effects of colonization on language, as well as ways of thinking about visual literacy.
