Nomination Deadline Extended to 5/2 for the Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. Student Prize for Civility in Public Life

We are pleased to announce that nominations are open for the 2022 Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. Student Prize for Civility in Public Life. Established in 2017, the prize seeks to honor seniors who have demonstrated authentic and courageous civility in an important moment and/or those who have demonstrated steadfast civility throughout their undergraduate careers.

Nominees for the prize also should be passionate advocates of their principles and values. All nominations will be examined by a diverse committee of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The Student Prize for Civility in Public Life Committee will select the recipient(s) in consultation with the Dean of Students. You can learn more about previous recipients here.

Prize Criteria

The Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. Student Prize for Civility in Public Life is awarded based on nominations from the Allegheny College campus community. Nominees must:

  • Be seniors currently enrolled as a full-time Allegheny College student
  • Be in good academic standing with a 2.75 or above semester and cumulative GPA
  • Be in good student conduct standing
  • Be passionate about Allegheny and its Statement of Community
  • Demonstrate a readiness to listen to different ideas and opinions and to communicate with civility and respect

Nominations may be submitted by Allegheny faculty, staff, administrators, or students, or students may choose to nominate themselves for the award. Nominations must be accompanied by responses to the questions below.

Nomination Questions

  • Please describe your relationship to the nominee and the nominee’s primary area of involvement (academic major; academic, student, or other organization; offices held; length of service, etc.).
  • Please detail how this nominee has had a significant impact on civility and respect on our campus and beyond.
  • What sets this nominee apart from other students?
