The Office of URSCA announces a funding opportunity for students seeking to participate in the collaborative Student-Faculty Research (SFR) Program for summer 2023. The SFR Program offers students and faculty the opportunity to work together on a research project of mutual interest. The project cannot be directly related to the student’s senior project (i.e., the work resulting from the summer research cannot be part of the senior project itself); however, summer research projects can serve as preparation for the senior project. This program is not available for independent studies, summer internships, or assistantships. In order to be eligible to participate in this program, student research must be conducted in collaboration with an Allegheny faculty member and the applicant must be a continuing student (i.e., not a May 2023 graduate) in good academic standing. Students can receive an award of up to $4,000 for an 8-week research program (pro-rated for fewer weeks). Students whose proposals are funded will also receive an award that covers 50% of the billed Room and Board charges for on-campus housing during their research project. Specific details about room and board will be available at a later date.

Like previous summers, the due date for the completed SFR Program application will be sometime in March of the Spring ’23 semester. However, the Office of URSCA is making the proposal available much sooner than previous years so that students and faculty can have a longer period of time to work on preparing a successful proposal. Students should visit this link to download the proposal.

Prof. Matthew Venesky (the Director of URSCA) will also be offering a workshop on Thursday, December 1st from 12:30 – 1:30 pm in the Tillotson Room of the Tippie Alumni Center for students interested in summer research. In this workshop, Prof. Venesky will provide a brief overview of the summer research programming on campus, how to write a successful proposal, and the steps that you’ll need to take to complete the application for summer research. Please complete this Google Form by 5:00 PM on Monday 11/21 so that Prof. Venesky can have enough materials/food for each attendee.

Please email Prof. Venesky (mvenesky@allegheny.edu) with any questions.
