You are invited to submit artwork to the Annual Student Show in the Allegheny Art Galleries. Entries may be dropped off in the Art Galleries on Tuesday, March 21, 11 am – 5 pm, and Wednesday, March 22, 11 am – 5 pm. A gallery assistant will be available during those hours to help with the submission process. Late entries will not be accepted. The Annual Student Show opens on Tuesday, March 28, with a celebratory reception in the Art Galleries from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.
Students may submit an optional, short written statement with their work. The statement should not exceed 100 words. This option is most geared toward artworks that require specific installation instructions or notes on display (for example, if your work is participatory in some way, your statement could explain how visitors interact with it). A statement may also address the content of the work. The statement is not required, and will not be a primary component of the juror’s evaluation. If you choose to submit a statement, it should be typed and printed out to be submitted in the gallery with your entry form(s).
A guest juror evaluates all submissions and selects artworks for display. Through the generosity of the late Foster B. Doane, a former Allegheny trustee, a Juror’s Prize will be awarded, along with prizes in Painting & Drawing; Photography, Video & Digital Media; Sculpture & Ceramics. Winners receive a monetary award and a book. This year, all entries will be considered for awards. Please keep in mind that traditionally, Doane prizes go to bodies of work–either a unified series of works linked by theme or subject matter or an ambitious individual artwork.
Students will be notified about the status of their submissions on the evening of Thursday, March 22. During submission drop-off, students will be asked to decide whether they would like to show works that are not accepted into the Annual Student Exhibition in the Student Art Society’s Salon des Refusés (held upstairs in the Boxx Gallery). If you do not wish to show your work in the Boxx, you must pick up submissions not accepted on Saturday, March 25 (timing details forthcoming via email). Otherwise, SAS will provide instructions for picking up work following the Salon. Unclaimed works will be discarded on Saturday evening.
Important: If you would like to submit a video or digital artwork (anything to be played on a screen or projected), please fill out a paper entry form in the gallery, and then email or share your file with artgallery@allegheny.edu. All digital submissions must be received by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 22. For digital submissions, if you are sharing a file via google drive, make sure the security settings allow for anyone with a link to view. This allows the art gallery account to then share your submission with art dept faculty.
The 2023 Annual Student Show is juried by artist Kris Rumman. Rumman is a Palestinian-American artist who creates sculptures, performances, and installations that act as impermanent fugitives. Appearing as temporary inhabitants and curious students of its visitors, her work often uses mirrors and reflections to track, surveil, guide, and comply with its witnesses. Raised in Toledo, Ohio, the birthplace of the Studio Glass Movement, she began her nearly two-decade-long relationship with glass. She graduated with a BFA from Bowling Green State University in 2008 and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in 2018. Rumman is based in New York, NY; she is an artist in residence with Erie Arts & Culture in March 2023.
