Professor Researches Effects of Climate Change on Soil

Professor of Environmental Science Richard Bowden was co-author on a paper, “Lignin properties in topsoils of a beech/oak forest after 8 years of manipulated litter fall: relevance of altered input and oxidation of lignin,” published in Plant and Soil.  Results of this project, conducted in Germany, examine the influence of climate change on soil chemistry and the stability of forest soil carbon. Soils contain large amounts of carbon, the release of which could enhance climate change.
