Our View: Allegheny’s bicentennial is reason to celebrate

The editorial below appeared in the Oct. 23, 2014 edition of the Erie Times-News.

Congratulations to Allegheny College for its 200-year anniversary celebration, which will showcase the impact this academic institution has made on our region and the nation.

The Rev. Timothy Alden Jr. and other leading citizens of Meadville established the college on June 20, 1815.

But just as the Erie Bicentennial Commission laid out a two-year plan to mark the 200-year anniversary of the Sept. 10, 1813, Battle of Lake Erie, Allegheny College will celebrate its landmark anniversary for months in advance. In this time span, Allegheny will bring interesting speakers and other community events to campus.
