Nominations Sought for Davies Award for Outstanding Community Service

Allegheny College is seeking nominations for the 12th annual Lew and Ellie Davies Award for Outstanding Community Service. The award, which includes a cash prize, will be given to an Allegheny student who has made a significant, demonstrable contribution to the Meadville-area community. Nominees are expected to have gone above and beyond in their volunteering or through an internship, and to have positively influenced other Allegheny students through their service and dedication.

The Lew and Ellie Davies Award is given in honor of Lew Davies, a 1940 graduate of Allegheny who majored in business and economics. Davies returned to Meadville following his service in World War II, and married Eleanor “Ellie” Bainer. As a successful businessman and community leader, as well as an active alumnus and trustee of the college until his death in 2003, Davies sought to build cooperation between the college and the community. Ellie Davies has received multiple awards, such as the Gov. Raymond P. Shafer Award for Distinguished Community Service.

The Davies Community Service Leader Program was created in 2003, endowed by the Davies family to honor Lew’s life and legacy. It strives to integrate Allegheny students into organizations across the Meadville area through leaders who collaborate as active partners with community organizations on unique projects. One of the many goals of the Davies Program is to further the Allegheny tradition of campus-community partnership and civic engagement.

Students must be nominated by a local community organization in order to be considered, but they do not have to be Davies Community Service Leaders in order to qualify for the award. Contact Bethany Cocchi, the Davies Program coordinator, at (814) 332-5318 or bcocchi@allegheny.edu or Dave Roncolato at droncola@allegheny.edu with any questions about the program or application process.

Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 3, to Bethany Cocchi, The Gateway – Office of Civic Engagement, Allegheny College, 520 North Main St., Meadville PA 16335, or by email to bcocchi@allegheny.edu .

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee with representation from the Davies family, the Meadville community, and Allegheny College. The award will be presented at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 26. More information is available at https://sites.allegheny.edu/davies/ .
