Herman, Heuchert Present at Pennsylvania School Librarian Association Conference

Catherine Herman ’17, and Beth Heuchert, former Allegheny faculty member and current librarian in the Crawford Central School District, attended and presented at the Pennsylvania School Librarian Association conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania, from March 30 through April 1.

The title of their presentation was “Engaging students with books through the use of traveling museum pieces”. Their presentation focused on the innovative program that Herman learned about while working as an intern for Heuchert in the local schools. The program comprises of using museum artifacts (huge whale vertebra, anaconda skins, stuffed tropical birds, etc.) to get children interested in finding library resources to learn more about what intrigues them. It is also successful in stimulating writing projects and getting students (and teachers) excited about learning.
