These funds may provide full or partial funding up to $1000 per student for research or conference travel, and these resources may be supplemented through other funding sources at Allegheny. The funds also support the purchase of research materials to be used by students in pursuit of the Senior Project in Philosophy. In most cases, funding up to $500 is available.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>James F. Sheridan, Jr. Memorial Fund<\/strong> was established in memory of Jim Sheridan \u2013 Allegheny College Professor of Philosophy and alumnus (Class of 1950) \u2013 by his friends, family, and beloved wife Nancy.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> Professor Bill Bywater Endowment<\/strong> was established by Barbara Creed in honor of her brother, who began teaching at Allegheny in 1968. The Bywater Endowment <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/philosophy\/bywater-social-justice-programming\/\">has supported student conferences and other events at Allegheny<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Fh1KK2kVt4b3B0H1F8Ncb3r5M74ONwiJBYit-L6L7bE\/copy\"><strong>application<\/strong><\/a> for Sheridan and Bywater funding should include an overview of the research project, an explanation of the research to be undertaken, and a budget. xmlns:h=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Philosophy Major Learning Outcomes<\/h3><p xmlns:h=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">Students who successfully complete a major in Philosophy should be able to:<\/p><ul xmlns:h=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\"><li>Read and comprehend arguments in their primary sources (in translation, as necessary);<\/li>&#13;\n\t<li>Demonstrate an understanding of the methodologies employed in philosophical inquiry, as well as the cultural and historical origins of those methods;<\/li>&#13;\n\t<li>Engage in a critical analysis of the legitimacy and limitations of the knowledge these methodologies elicit;<\/li>&#13;\n\t<li>Appreciate the role of cultural and historical context in the development of philosophy, and appreciate the ethical issues created by the culture and the dominant philosophies of the modern and contemporary West;<\/li>&#13;\n\t<li>Articulate their own thoughts and ideas relevant to philosophical inquiry orally and write essays that are clear and well structured, exhibiting command of the preceding abilities.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul><h3 xmlns:h=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">The Philosophy Major<\/h3><p xmlns:h=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xhtml\">The major in Philosophy leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Philosophy majors are required to have a GPA of at least 2.0 in the major at graduation. He has authored, edited, and\u00a0co-edited sixteen books, 32 academic articles, and 31 book chapters. His first published book received an Honorable Mention from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights, and three of his edited books have received CHOICE outstanding academic book awards. He is co-Editor of the American Philosophical Association Newsletter on Philosophy and the Black Experience, and is an ex officio member of the American Philosophical Association Committee on Blacks in Philosophy. Mills<\/h4>\n<p>John Evans Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy, Northwestern University<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sitesmedia.s3.amazonaws.com\/philo\/files\/2016\/01\/Charles-outlining.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1415 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sitesmedia.s3.amazonaws.com\/philo\/files\/2016\/01\/Charles-outlining-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Charles outlining\" width=\"354\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>Charles W. Mills is John Evans Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy. He works in the general area of social and political philosophy, particularly in oppositional political theory as centered on class, gender, and race. In recent years, he has been focusing on race. He did his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, and is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and five books. His first book, <i>The Racial Contract <\/i>(Cornell University, 1997), won a Myers Outstanding Book Award for the study of bigotry and human rights in North America. It has been adopted widely in courses across the United States (more than 100 campuses so far), not just in philosophy, but also political science, sociology, anthropology, African-American, and race relations. His second book,<i> Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race<\/i> (Cornell University, 1998), was a finalist for the award for the most important North American work in social philosophy of that year. His fourth book, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polity.co.uk\/book.asp?ref=9780745640037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contract and Domination<\/a> <\/i>(Polity Press, 2007), is co-authored with Carole Pateman, who wrote <i>The Sexual Contract <\/i>(Stanford University Press, 1988), and it seeks to bring the two \u201ccontracts\u201d together. His most recent book is a collection of his Caribbean essays, <i>Radical Theory, Caribbean Reality: Race, Class and Social Domination<\/i> (University of the West Indies Press, 2010). Before joining Northwestern, Charles Mills taught at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was a UIC Distinguished Professor.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mills visited Allegheny as Diversity Scholar in Residence in 2011.
