Cook, Allegheny College has made a strong and continued commitment toward becoming a sustainable campus. President Cook was one of the first college presidents to sign the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment. The College has made a commitment to sustainable construction since 2005 as evidenced by: (1) constructing North Village Phase 1 to LEED Certified standards; (2) incorporating many sustainable features, such as a green roof and ENERGY STAR-rated mechanical and electrical equipment, into the construction of the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts; (3) designing North Village Phase 2 to LEED Silver standards; and, (4) designing the renovation of Carr Hall to LEED certification standards. Sustainable materials and supplies, such as low VOC paints, sustainable carpeting, energy efficient T8 fluorescent lights, Energy Star appliances and mechanical equipment, have been incorporated into routine operations. In 2008 the College created the position of Sustainability Coordinator and filled the position in July 2008. The Sustainability Coordinator coordinates all activities on campus that support our sustainability initiative.

Daily operations and maintenance of campus facilities and property by the Physical Plant staff, as well as construction of new facilities reflect this commitment. Sustainable materials and supplies, such as low VOC paints, sustainable carpeting, energy efficient T8 fluorescent lights, Energy Star appliances and mechanical equipment, have been incorporated into routine operations. Physical Plant staff members are actively engaged in providing full-scale composting to reduce waste and produce the fertilizer and compost used in our sustainable grounds maintenance program. A Landscaping Master Plan has been developed to set the standards for, and to facilitate the performance of, a campus-wide sustainable grounds maintenance program. The Physical Plant staff is working with the College’s Sustainability Coordinator to develop policies for best management practices in sustainable purchasing, management of solid waste and green cleaning. Design review standards have been implemented to ensure that that the College receives the most cost-effective lifetime value for new construction and facility upgrades.

An important part of our commitment to a sustainable is the implementation of best practices in energy management. The Director of Physical Plant is personally involved with detailed monitoring of the college’s utility bills in order to identify facilities that are high users and to set priorities for projects/upgrades designed to lower utility use. He also advises college administration in behavioral changes that can help lower utility consumption. In conjunction with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), the College entered into a contract with Siemens for the performance of a campus-wide energy audit. Members of the Physical Plant staff worked closely with the Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. technical staff to facilitate access to facilities and gathering of data. The audit results were presented in July 2008. After review by college and Physical Plant administration and key trades workers the College is proceeding to prioritize and fund the recommended projects.

In addition Physical Plant staff are aware of the importance of this function and are actively engaged in supporting our efforts by identifying and reporting energy issues when observed and by correcting problems when funds are available. The HVAC mechanic controls heating and cooling in campus buildings through the Siemens Energy Control System. Electrical loads are shed whenever practical, which provides a source of income to the College. The Director constantly checks for fluctuations in utility pricing and negotiates with utility providers for better service rates whenever possible. ENERGY STAR-rated equipment is installed whenever equipment needs to be replaced. An infrared camera was purchased to facilitate the identification of energy losses throughout the campus.

Benefits

Significant financial benefits gained from energy savings, such as larger purchasing power for both the College and the Medical Center as well as shared expenses for training and public outreach.

Improved working and living environments.

Renewal of infrastructure.

Environmental benefits including a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, smog and acid rain.

Positive impact on the local economy by creating direct and indirect employment.

Opportunity for Allegheny College to demonstrate its leadership in facility management and in finding innovative solutions to reduce costs and provide better working environments.

Under the leadership of former President Richard J. This system can track work orders in several ways (building, room, date of submittal, trade, etc.) and also keep track of hours, inventory and equipment. All Allegheny employees have access to Schooldude as do RA’s. If you are having an issue, please enter a work order and we will respond to it as soon as possible.

Students: If you are having any issues please let your RA know so they can submit a work order for you.

There are several ways to request work but the preferred method, for all non-emergencies, is through the on-line work order form. Of course, all legitimate emergency work requests can be called in to the Physical Plant Office (332-5378) during normal office hours (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or by calling the Security Department (332-3357) at any other time. The Physical Plant Office staff is always willing to discuss your work order needs or special requests when questions arise which cannot be answered through the other methods.

Types of Work Order Requests and Procedures:

Emergency Work Order Requests: These are the type that require immediate action in order to continue functions. When these requests are called in to the Physical Plant Office, the staff will attempt to have someone respond as soon as possible. When Security is notified after office hours, Physical Plant staff will be called in from off campus. Corrections will be made within 24 hours unless there is a problem with parts or supplies availability. Some examples of emergency requests include losing power in an area, a drain clogging causing a flood, a boiler failing during the heating season, key broken in door lock, toilets over-flowing, etc.

Urgent Work Order Requests: These are less important than emergency type, but higher priority than routine. The staff will again have someone respond as soon as possible who will repair or, at least, temporarily alleviate the problem. Permanent repairs will be completed within a few days.

Routine Work Requests: These types are everyday maintenance requests that are usually completed on a first in, first out basis. Delivery requests, leaking faucets, lighting ballast replacements, and furniture repairs are some examples.

Project Work Requests: These are usually minor renovation or new construction, as opposed to maintenance, and generally require numerous man-hours to complete. They are usually scheduled during breaks in the academic calendar and depend on the availability of manpower and funding. These requests often require the requester to have the funding needed to complete them, due to Physical Plant budget constraints.

Events Set-Up Requests: Work orders should be done for all set-ups. Please attach a diagram of the set-up when possible. Event set-ups require a minimum of 48 hours notice. Please also indicate when the event can be taken down.

Submit Work Order Request

How to submit a work order in Schooldude 08-21-20

Facility Access Guidelines (formerly Key Requisition Guidelines)

Access (Card and Key) is a major source of security to the college community; therefore, the responsibility of it should be taken seriously. We try our hardest to accommodate all requests in a timely and efficient manner.

In recent months the requests for setups and tear downs has been considerable. We have tried to complete them all, however, it is very hard to do this without proper notice. Although we acknowledge that sometimes things do come up, we are implementing a new policy on requests for these types of events. (ie. Chair set up, tables, podiums, etc…) We are asking that you please give us at least 24 hours prior to the time items are needed. If the items are needed for a weekend, please notify us by 2pm the Thursday before. This way we can plan and make sure that we have enough staff and vehicles available to accommodate all the requests, and try to avoid any conflicts or miscommunication.

If we do not receive at least 24 hours prior notice, we cannot guarantee that your requests will be met. We hope that this does not cause any issues for any of you, but that this will make things run more smoothly for all involved. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the operations and maintenance, renovations, and construction of all buildings, grounds, and utilities of the College.
