Andrew Goodman was a 20-year-old Queens College sophomore whose life was taken from him for acting on what he believed. Along with two other young civil rights activists, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, Goodman was murdered in Mississippi in 1964 while attempting to register African-Americans to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/cpp\/\">Center for Political Participation (CPP)<\/a> at Allegheny College initiated the partnership with\u00a0the Andrew Goodman Foundation in the fall of 2014 to tie in with the college&#8217;s annual theme, the &#8220;Year of Civil Rights&#8221; which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and Freedom Summer 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Several activities took place in 2014 including\u00a0the selection of two Allegheny students as AGF <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewgoodman.org\/vote-everywhere\/\">Vote Everywhere<\/a> Ambassadors\u00a0for 2015. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/news\/2014\/12\/22\/two-allegheny-college-students-imani-prince-and-brianna-cusanno-selected-as-vote-everywhere-ambassadors\/\">These students<\/a> completed a year-long paid internship with the Andrew Goodman Foundation on Allegheny&#8217;s\u00a0campus. \u00a0Also, the\u00a0CPP partnered with Andrew Goodman Foundation and hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/news\/2014\/11\/10\/cpp-partners-with-andrew-goodman-foundation-hosts-community-watch-party-for-hidden-heroes-awards\/\">community watch party <\/a>to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer 1964 at the Hidden Heroes Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The Andrew Goodman Foundation empowers the next generation to initiate and sustain creative and effective social action and enables leaders and their communities to flourish by operating and investing in programs that advance civic engagement and intergenerational coalitions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/political-science\/faculty\/andrew-bloeser\/\">Assistant Professor Andrew Bloeser <\/a>is currently the\u00a0faculty advisor for this organization. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/political-science\/?page_id=1777&amp;preview=true\">Click here<\/a> for the list of current student ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Andrew Goodman Foundation\u00a0(AGF) was established in 1966 by Robert and Carolyn Goodman to carry on the spirit and the purpose of their son\u2019s life. Pi Sigma Alpha programs for members and chapters include grants for chapter programs, scholarships for graduate study, best graduate and undergraduate student paper awards, and best chapter and best chapter advisor awards. Pi Sigma Alpha programs for the profession include best paper awards for the annual meetings of the American Political Science Association and the regional political science associations, and lectures by public figures or journalists at the APSA, regional, and state association meetings.
