The course is designed to give students an understanding of the tools and fundamental physical concepts of astronomy. Topics covered include celestial timekeeping, gravity, orbits, light, the birth and evolution of stars, black holes and other compact objects, dark matter, dark energy, and the big bang theory. Use is made of the Wible Planetarium and the Newton Observatory telescopes. Students must participate in an evening observing session at some point during the semester. Transcript Freeze — May 8 through May 15

Effective May 8, transcript requests cannot be processed until spring semester grades are posted. This applies to ALL requests — from current students, pending graduates, and alumni.

If you have a deadline date before or near May 8, 2018, we recommend that you request your transcript(s) prior to May 8; otherwise it will be held until May 15, 2018. Students wishing to have spring semester grades should indicate “Hold for Current Semester Grades” when ordering. If you do not, you may need to order a second transcript. We anticipate that these transcripts will be processed and forwarded on May 15.

Seniors graduating in May 2018 should select “Hold for Current Semester Grades & Degree Posted” to make sure their degree is listed on the transcript. If you do not, you may need to order a second transcript. We anticipate that these transcripts will be processed and forwarded on May 15.

Students who are facing academic suspension or dismissal will have their transcripts held until after the process concludes, on or around May 24.

Students who are not graduating seniors may continue to order transcripts as usual, but should be aware that delivery will be delayed during this period. Please plan ahead!!

Fall 2018 Registration Updates (April 2018)

Pre-registration for Fall 2018 continues!!

On Monday, April 30, WebAdvisor will be temporarily closed while we make final adjustments to the Fall schedule. All continuing students without holds will have had the opportunity to register by this time.

WebAdvisor will re-open on Tuesday, May 1. Add cards will also be available on May 1. Please use Add cards to register (if the instructor grants permission) for:

  • courses that are full
  • courses that have restrictions you do not meet (e.g., FR/SO only)
  • courses that require the instructor’s signature (in “Search for Sections” in WebAdvisor, these courses are designated “Yes” in the “Sign Req” column).

Please note that an Add card does not override a general registration hold (e.g., no advisor approval or a financial hold).

After May 1, students may continue to add unrestricted courses that have open seats online, and also drop any course online. WebAdvisor will remain open for these course adjustments until June 29.

Students may register for up to 18 credits at this time. Continuing students wishing to register for 19 or more credits may do so after First-Year Course Registration ends in early August. At that point students may register for up to 20 credits with no special permission. Once the Fall semester starts in August, students may register for up to 21 credits with the permission of their advisor, and 22 credits and above with the permission of their advisor and the registrar. Overload forms will be available at the beginning of the Fall 2018 semester in August. Credit/No Credit cards will be available at the same time.

Please contact the Registrar’s Office at registrar@allegheny.edu if you encounter any problems registering for Fall classes.

Fall 2018 Registration Updates (March 2018)

Registration for Fall 2018 starts on Monday, Apr. 9. Check the schedule and talk to your advisor!

WebAdvisor is expected to open for you to view the 2018-2019 course schedule by the time we return from Spring Break on Monday, March 26. Please see the Registration Schedule or check your profile on WebAdvisor to see when you are eligible to register. You can go to the Course Information page to get specific information about Fall 2018 courses.

Make sure to consult with your academic advisor(s) before your scheduled registration time to receive permission to register – you will not be permitted to register for any classes without your advisor’s approval (double majors: both advisors must approve you to register).

If you have previously been informed that you must declare a major and minor this semester, you must also have submitted your declaration form to be able to register.

Advising updates for students interested in the sequencing of courses for Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

The specific sequencing of courses is very important in many departments, especially those in the STEM fields. Please see here for some specific advising updates pertaining to Fall 2018.

Pending courses: there are a number of Fall courses pending approval that are not on WebAdvisor yet.

Please see here for information about courses pending official approval that will not appear on WebAdvisor until Friday, April 6.

‘X’ Deadline for Fall 2018 is Monday 26 March

‘X’ Deadline: The last day to opt for a student-initiated withdrawal from a course (“X“) is Monday 26 March.

Forms for withdrawals are available in the Registrar’s Office and require the signatures of the instructor and your academic advisor. The completed forms must be turned in to the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m. on Monday 26 March. Please keep in mind that only one student-initiated withdrawal per student is permitted per semester. If you wish to take a leave of absence from the College (i.e., to withdraw from all classes this semester), please contact the Dean of Students Office.

If taking a student-initiated withdrawal will leave you with fewer than 12 credits for the semester, you are strongly encouraged to consult with Financial Aid and Financial Services before you submit the card.

Seniors: Tell Us If You Plan to “Walk” in Commencement 2018

Seniors: Tell Us If You Plan to “Walk” in Commencement 2018

If you have recently graduated and not participated in a Commencement ceremony, or if your anticipated graduation date is May 2018, September 2018, or January 2019, then you are eligible to walk in the 2018 Commencement ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Please see the Commencement website for details of the ceremony.

If you are eligible to walk, you should have received an email from the Registrar with a link to a form that you need to complete. If you did not receive that message (please check Spam and Trash first), and you think you are eligible to walk, please contact registrar@allegheny.edu. Remember, you need to either be a recent graduate who has not walked, or else an anticipated graduate in May 2018, September 2018, or January 2019.

If you have not yet responded, you will receive another reminder e-mail before the deadline, which is Friday, March 23, 2018. If you do not respond, we will assume you are not attending Commencement.

Spring Registration Update (late January 2018)

Add/Drop/CR-NC Deadline is Monday 29 January at 4:00 pm

Monday, January 29 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline to add a class, drop a class, or declare a course Credit/No Credit for the Spring semester. Add cards and Credit/No Credit cards must be turned in to the Registrar’s Office by 4:00 p.m. on 1/29. Drops must be completed on-line via WebAdvisor by 4:00 p.m. on 1/29.

Adding a class requires the instructor’s signature, and declaring a class Credit/No Credit requires the advisor’s signature. Students are reminded that faculty schedules vary, so any needed signatures should be obtained as soon as possible. Students who miss the deadline will NOT be able to change their schedules.

Seniors: Check your Senior Project Registration!!

Please see here for directions on how to register for a “double” senior project. If a student is writing a combined comp, they need to make sure their registration is for “DOUBL HIST/MATH 600″ or “DOUBL CMPSC/COMM 610,” as the case may be. If a student is writing two separate comps, this does not apply; they will need to register as per the rules of their two majors.

If you are facing a situation where your major departments have different registration requirements for senior projects, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ADVISORS BEFORE YOU REGISTER!! So, for example, one program requires a two semester comp and the other doesn’t; or one program requires a 2 credit 600 and the other a 4 credit 600. If you are uncertain, you can find that information in the Academic Bulletin for the year you first came to Allegheny.

Seniors: will you graduate?

Have you checked your Degree Audit? Do you see this under the “Program Summary” section?

Program Summary: (Pending (Anticipated Complete))

If you do not see this on your Degree Audit, please consult with your academic advisor BEFORE THE SPRING ADD DEADLINE, which is Monday, January 29 at 4:00 pm.
