The people he met at Yale were important in the rest of his career; classmates included future Governor William Scranton, President Gerald Ford, Supreme Court Justices Potter Stewart and Byron White, and many others with prominent political careers such as Cyrus Vance and Sargent Shriver. Shafer&#8217;s love for athletics continued as he played just about every intra-mural sport offered at Yale. He was the high scorer for his fraternity&#8217;s champion basketball team. David P. and Mina Belle Shafer. He moved to Meadville in 1933 when his father was appointed pastor to the First Christian Church. Ray Shafer is the youngest of a family of five (siblings are Ruth, Paul, Harold and Gladys). He attended Meadville High School for only his senior year, but was successful, being elected president to several school organizations. Ray Shafer began his excellence in sports as he became a member of the school&#8217;s championship basketball team. He also played Little League baseball and football. Shafer similarly demonstrated his academic achievements as he was named to the National Honor Society and was valedictorian of his class. Shafer held the public offices of District Attorney in Crawford County, and Lieutenant Governor before being elected Governor of Pennsylvania in 1966, serving his term from 1967-1971. From the 1980s onward, Shafer was associated with law firms in Washington D.C. and Meadville, Pennsylvania, while continuing his life of public service. After a long and productive life devoted to law, education, business, philanthropy, and public service, Raymond Shafer died on December 12, 2006, in Meadville Medical Center, at the age of 89 years.
