What Does Allegheny College Do for Sustainability?
Sustainability at Allegheny College is a campus-wide effort spanning academics, research, student life, and operations. Every sustainability success has happened because of the work of a strong interdisciplinary group of students, staff, and faculty. Sustainability has been a priority for Allegheny College for decades. In 2002, the Board of Trustees adopted a set of Environmental Guiding Principles for the college, and in 2007 Allegheny College became a signatory to the Second Nature Presidents’ Climate Commitment. After hiring its first sustainability staff member in 2008 and adopting a carbon neutrality goal in 2010, Allegheny College made continuous advancement toward sustainability goals. Allegheny College achieved carbon neutrality in 2020, and has since then continued to progress toward further decarbonization through increased efficiency and renewable energy purchases.
