A deeper, more holistic understanding of sustainability embraces resilience. Resilience, as defined by Second Nature, is \u201cthe ability of a system or community to survive disruption and to anticipate, adapt, and flourish in the face of change.\u201d A carbon neutral institution will still experience the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events, alongside its community; resilience seeks collaborations to strengthen a community despite the changes and challenges it experiences.<\/p>\n<h4>Community Impact Hub<\/h4>\n<p>Allegheny College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alleghenyhub.com\/\">Community Impact Hub<\/a> supports efforts to build a more just, resilient, and flourishing place. Through this collaborative network, students are mentored to apply and integrate their knowledge, develop leadership skills, discern career paths and develop a commitment to engaged citizenship.<\/p>\n<h4>Resilience Commitment<\/h4>\n<p>Our Climate Commitment, in partnership with Second Nature, goes beyond addressing our carbon footprint to include a commitment to develop increased resilience. We\u2019ve partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/mymeadville.us\/\">My Meadville<\/a> process to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/allegheny.edu\/meadville-community-resilience\/home\">resilience assessment<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mymeadville.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/My-Meadville-Community-Action-Plan_digital-1.pdf\">community action plan<\/a> to improve the resilience of our home.<\/p>\n<h4>IDEAS Center<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/ideas\/\">Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access &amp; Social Justice (IDEAS) Center<\/a> offers support and empowerment to underserved student populations as well as a gathering space to build community. IDEAS also works to expand the awareness, dialogue, and engagement of the entire community in explorations of social equity and justice. The IDEAS Center Cultural Gardens offer space for students to grow the foods important to their cultures and traditions. The Mutual Aid Closet provides a space to donate, swap, or obtain winter clothing.<\/p>\n<h4>Meadville Collaborations<\/h4>\n<p>Allegheny has long partnered with the City of Meadville and various nonprofits, businesses, and organizations to advance research, develop programs, and create public artwork. Allegheny students helped the city complete a greenhouse gas inventory; analyzed the solar potential of a local brewery and public housing, and created public artwork such as Signs &amp; Flowers and Read Between the Signs in collaboration with PennDOT. Not only does this reduce our institutional waste, but it also supports sustainable habits that our graduates practice daily even after they leave our campus.<\/p>\n<h4>Compost<\/h4>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=luWCapS5oKQ\">on-campus compost facility<\/a> near the Robertson Athletics Complex processes kitchen waste and compostable dining ware, transforming it into nutrient-rich soil. We broadcast this soil and brew compost tea to spray on our lawns and athletic fields instead of using chemical fertilizers. Compost also fertilizes the organic produce grown in the Carr Hall Garden.<\/p>\n<h4>Green Box Program<\/h4>\n<p>Reusable boxes replace single-use, compostable containers in our dining halls, resulting in significant waste reduction and cost savings. The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/sustainability-update\/files\/2025\/02\/for_oos_website_and_gator_hub_widget.pdf\">Green Box program<\/a> is designed to be simple and accessible to all students. Dirty boxes can be returned to an automated return system, cleaning and disinfecting are offered by our dining service provider, and clean boxes are readily available at each point of food service.<\/p>\n<h4>Filtered Refill Stations<\/h4>\n<p>Dozens of water fountains throughout campus feature bottle refill stations so students and employees can access free, cold, filtered water as a convenient and sustainable option to purchasing water bottled in plastic. Ongoing student and faculty research in the Environmental Science and Sustainability Department continues to help us understand impacts and how to change habits around single-use bottled beverage purchases.<\/p>\n<h4>Student Programs<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/allegheny.edu\/student-life\/clubs-and-organizations\/?ecopen=green-coalition#green-coalition\">Green Coalition<\/a> organizes the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWtglvWjmen\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\">Trashion Show<\/a>, a catwalk display of inspired fashions featuring creative reuse and reimagining of trash items. Students organize clothes swap events and develop online businesses and apps to support the secondhand market. We offer an array of alternative transportation options to make it easy to avoid owning or using a car.<\/p>\n<h4>Bike Share<\/h4>\n<p>Use your student ID to check out a free bike, lock, and helmet from the library through the student-run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/acbikeshare\/\">Bike Share<\/a> program. Repair your personal bike at the bike maintenance station at the library or participate in open Bike Shop hours to learn maintenance skills from experienced bike mechanics. The Bike Share also hosts community bike rides, bike-blended smoothie events, and offers a fleet of expedition bikes in collaboration with the Outing Club.<\/p>\n<h4>CATA Loop<\/h4>\n<p>All students can catch free rides on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catabus.org\/the-loop\">CATA Loop<\/a>, a bus route tailored to college students. The route connects students to restaurants, shopping, and events in downtown Meadville and a movie theatre, grocery, and retail stores just outside Meadville.<\/p>\n<h4>EV Charging Stations<\/h4>\n<p>Plug into our Tesla and universal electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Vukovich and Bentley parking lots. Since water is such a defining component of our natural setting, Allegheny College works to responsibly manage our consumption of water and our stormwater runoff to French Creek.<\/p>\n<h4>Water Efficiency<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ve reduced our water consumption by 40 percent over the past decade through the installation of low-flow faucet and showerhead fixtures and switching to more water-efficient appliances like clothes washers. We also choose our campus landscaping to be native or adaptable to hot summers so we do not have to irrigate.<\/p>\n<h4>Filtered Refill Stations<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ve installed dozens of cold, filtered water stations where you can refill your bottle in academic and residential buildings. Meadville\u2019s tap water is from a glacial deposit aquifer and its quality is regularly assessed and publicly reported.<\/p>\n<h4>Green Roof<\/h4>\n<p>Laura\u2019s Rooftop Terrace looks like a grassy courtyard with lavender, trees, and cedar walkways, but it is also the roof above the costume and set shops in the Vukovich Center. Green roofs help capture and absorb rainwater, protect the roof membrane, add insulation, and minimize energy consumption in the building.<\/p>\n<h4>Native Wildflowers<\/h4>\n<p>More than an acre of Allegheny\u2019s central campus is planted in native species wildflowers from Ernst Conservation Seeds, a local company committed to seed mixes for ecological restoration, reclamation, and conservation. Our wildflowers eliminate a significant portion of grounds maintenance time and costs and absorb and filter runoff from an adjacent parking lot. Most importantly they add colorful, natural beauty to our campus and provide a unique research laboratory where it\u2019s not unusual to see students with nets hunting insects.<\/p>\n<h4>Green Cleaning Policy<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ve worked with our housekeeping partner, St. Moritz, to develop a green cleaning policy that is more environmentally friendly as well as better for air quality and your health.<\/p>\n<h4>Rain Gardens<\/h4>\n<p>We capture stormwater from parking lots and roofs in many beautifully landscaped rain gardens, which filter and recharge groundwater across campus. Rain gardens minimize the amount of stormwater entering the sewer system and discharging into French Creek. Sustainability in food production and dining are a priority at Allegheny College, showing up in curriculum, extracurricular activities, waste management, and purchasing.<\/p>\n<h4>Campus Gardens<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/sustainability-update\/programs\/carrden\/\">The Carr Hall Organic Garden<\/a>, also known as \u201cThe Carrden\u201d is a hands-on learning space that was founded in 2013 as part of an ESS Department Junior Seminar. The Carrden grows over 2,000 pounds of organic produce each year. Carrden harvests are featured at Brooks Dining Hall and McKinley\u2019s as herbal tea, hot sauce, salsa, elderberry syrup and more. Botanicals grown in the garden are used to create balms and lotion bars. The IDEAS Cultural Garden, Hillel Garden, and Allegheny Campus Student Garden are other opportunities for students to explore the nexus of food and culture through gardening and cooking with a community.<\/p>\n<h4>Parkhurst Dining and Catering<\/h4>\n<p>Our dining service partner, Parkhurst, emphasizes local and organic purchases through their FarmSource program and features low-impact diet options such as vegetarian and vegan at every meal.<\/p>\n<h4>Minimizing Food Waste<\/h4>\n<p>Allegheny College minimizes waste by composting kitchen scraps in the on-campus compost facility and incentivizing reusable dishware through the Green Box program. The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/sustainability-update\/files\/2025\/02\/for_oos_website_and_gator_hub_widget.pdf\">Green Box Program<\/a> is FREE* and EASY! Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVJbBhsFZLs\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\">Reuzzi app<\/a> to checkout and return green boxes plus earn points and rewards. Another way the campus community works together to reduce food waste is through the student-led <a href=\"https:\/\/allegheny.edu\/student-life\/clubs-and-organizations\/?ecopen=green-coalition#green-coalition:~:text=College%20Bike%20Share%2C-,Food%20Recovery%20Network%20(FRN),-%2C%20Green%20Students%20of\">Food Recovery Network<\/a>. Student volunteers partner with Parkhurst to gather and donate leftover food from the dining halls to local community partners.<\/p>\n<h4>Agriculture &amp; Food in Curriculum<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.allegheny.edu\/envsci\/\">Environmental Science and Sustainability Department<\/a> offers several curricular explorations of sustainable agriculture and local food theory\u2014Soil to Plate and Small Scale Agriculture. Allegheny prioritizes energy efficiency in our operations and behaviors even as we install on-campus renewable-energy systems and purchase electricity from renewable generation.<\/p>\n<h4>Efficiency<\/h4>\n<p>Improving the energy efficiency of our campus buildings and operations is a crucial component of our carbon footprint management. It\u2019s an interesting challenge on a historic campus where many buildings are 100 to 200 years old. We\u2019ve added insulation; retrofitted boilers, chillers, and lighting; installed controls; and even considered how to optimize the density of use in our buildings. Over the past decade and a half, we\u2019ve improved our campus efficiency by 19.2% despite increasing our total square footage and number of residential students.<\/p>\n<h4>Better Buildings Initiative<\/h4>\n<p>In 2011, Allegheny College was the only small liberal arts college invited by the Obama White House to participate in the Better Buildings Challenge, an initiative to model and share effective strategies to improve energy efficiency by at least 20% over 10 years.<\/p>\n<h4>Wind Renewable Energy Credits<\/h4>\n<p>Since 2011, Allegheny College has purchased all its electricity from Green-e\u00ae certified, wind-generated, renewable sources.<\/p>\n<h4>Renewable Energy Greenhouse<\/h4>\n<p>In the heart of our Carr Hall Garden, we\u2019ve constructed a greenhouse that features a switchgrass pellet stove for heating and a neon-pink roof of luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) panels. The dye-coated panels, a novel photovoltaic technology, capture and convert wavelengths of light that plants cannot use into electricity while allowing photosynthetically active light to reach the plants below.<br \/>\nAllegheny Game Changing Greenhouse Takes Root<\/p>\n<h4>Geothermal Heat Pumps<\/h4>\n<p>Efficiently heating and cooling our buildings can be a challenge since we experience seasonal temperature extremes in Meadville. To cool and heat our buildings during summers and winters, we rely on geothermal (aka geo-exchange) heat pumps to harness the constant temperature of the earth rather than using the more extreme outside air temperatures. We have four geothermal heat pump systems in North Village Phases I &amp; II, 454 House, and Bentley Hall.<\/p>\n<h4>LEED Certified &amp; Sustainable Construction<\/h4>\n<p>Allegheny College has pledged that all new construction will be constructed to the LEED\u00ae Silver level. In addition, renovations of our historic buildings are also considered for LEED certification and managed to prioritize efficiency and environmental responsibility regardless of certification. Our first LEED certified building, and the first in northwestern Pennsylvania, was a result of seminar students collaborating with the architect and contractor to research and implement the process in the design and construction of North Village Phase I. North Village Phase II and a renovation of Carr Hall were each certified LEED Gold.<\/p>\n<h4>On-campus Solar<\/h4>\n<p>We generate 8,500 kWh of solar energy on campus annually, equal to the carbon sequestration ability of seven acres of U.S. forests. Our 24-panel Energy Challenge array was funded entirely by the savings realized through student efforts during our Annual Energy Challenge.<br \/>\nEnergy Management<\/p>\n<p>Even efficient buildings can lose efficiency if they are not managed carefully, both operationally and behaviorally.
