Social Media Ambassadors volunteer to engage with alumni around the world and with the College on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and LinkedIn.
Participants in the Alumni Social Media Ambassador (SMA) program will help generate positive energy about Allegheny College online. SMAs help disseminate and generate content for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and LinkedIn.
Alumni interested in becoming social media ambassadors should fill out the online volunteer form.
Roles and Responsibilities
SMAs commit to serve for a one-year term, with the option to renew. Ambassadors must agree to Allegheny’s social media guidelines.
SMAs are expected to maintain contact with the College’s Social Media Team staff, including semi-annual conference calls, to collaborate with the staff and other ambassadors. The Social Media team will send regular email communication to SMAs with updates about upcoming social media events and opportunities.
They will be asked to regularly share content from College social media accounts that interest them and which they believe would resonate with alumni in their social networks. In addition, they will promote time sensitive College initiatives and programs. These may include major campus events, fundraising campaigns, and admissions related information.
The time commitment for this volunteer role is about one hour per month.
SMAs can accomplish these goals in many ways:
- Like, comment on, share, or retweet posts from College social media accounts.
- Tweet from alumni events and encourage others to do the same.
- Post photos from events on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (always using the hashtag #acgatorgram).
- Encourage their alumni network to follow alumni social media accounts.
- Initiate and join discussions on the Allegheny College Alumni LinkedIn group, Allegheny College Alumni Network.
Do I need to be active on all the College’s social media accounts?
No! While the ideal ambassador would have influence on many social networks we know that some alumni may be extremely influential on Facebook, but not have a Twitter account. You can indicate your preferred social media outlets on your SMA application.
How often do I need to be actively promoting College social media posts?
We encourage SMAs to be as active as possible given their work and home life schedule. SMAs should be active once a week at a minimum; however during our high priority events (fundraising challenges and other identified major events) we need everyone to be as active as possible. We estimate about an hour a month commitment.
Do I need to change my privacy settings?
No! The idea is that you will help spread Allegheny information to your followers. We’re not asking that you change any settings – just share information in your voice, to your peers.
