Allegheny College student Sarah Shapley will participate in a Fulbright Summer Institute to study in Wales in the United Kingdom through one of the most prestigious and selective summer scholarship programs operating worldwide.<\/p>\n

Sarah Shapley will study in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Shapley, a rising junior, is from Fairport in suburban Rochester, New York. She is a major in international studies with a minor in women\u2019s, gender, and sexuality studies.<\/p>\n

Beginning in mid-June, Shapley will participate in a three-week summer program to study identity and nationhood in Wales at Aberystwyth University. The students she will be among will be able to discover the National Library of Wales, one of the U.K.\u2019s five copyright libraries; learn some of the Welsh language; participate in roundtable discussions with key figures in Welsh politics; and explore the countryside of mid-Wales, including a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage site.<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon learning I received the placement, I was incredibly excited and thankful to have received an opportunity that would enrich both my academic and personal experience,\u201d Shapley said. \u201cAs a Fulbright summer program participant, I hope to learn more about the Welsh language and culture, as well as delve into and engage in a topic of study that interests me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am also excited to meet new people and be immersed in a new culture,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope this work will enable me to have a deeper understanding of the concept of identity and nationhood, so that in the future I can apply this new understanding to whatever work I end up doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission is a bilateral, transatlantic scholarship program, offering awards and summer programs for study or research in any field at any accredited university in the United States or United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards, the commission looks not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Program, and a plan to give back to the recipient\u2019s home country upon returning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the fact that Sarah is the third student in a row that we have sent to participate in this program says something about the kinds of things our students are doing at Allegheny,\u201d said Patrick Jackson, director of fellowship advising at the College.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a supremely competitive field, they stand out,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cThe Fulbright Summer Institute in the U.K. is one of the most competitive fellowships that first- and second-year students can pursue and our continued winning of them is a testament to our young students\u2019 potential. I think Sarah is going to come back from her summer in the U.K. with some new and interesting perspectives to share. If the experiences of our previous winners is any indication, she\u2019ll also come back with a much better idea of how she wants to proceed with her education here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each year, the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission supports around 60 U.K. and U.S. undergraduate students to undertake a demanding academic and cultural summer program at leading institutions in the U.S. and U.K. Fulbright Summer Institutes cover all participant costs. In addition, Fulbright summer participants receive a distinctive support and cultural education program including visa processing, a comprehensive pre-departure orientation, enrichment opportunities in country, a re-entry session and the opportunity to join alumni networks.<\/p>\n

The U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission is part of the Fulbright program conceived by Senator J. William Fulbright in the aftermath of World War II to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange. Award recipients and summer program participants will be the future leaders for tomorrow and support the \u201cspecial relationship\u201d between the U.S. and U.K.<\/p>\n

Barbara Shaw is the first Brett \u201965 and Gwendolyn \u201964 Elliott Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Allegheny.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Barbara L. Shaw has been named the first recipient of the Brett \u201965 and Gwendolyn \u201964 Elliott Professorship for Interdisciplinary Studies at Allegheny College.<\/p>\n

Shaw teaches in the Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program and has been at Allegheny since 2009. She holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Colby College and a doctorate in American Studies with a graduate certificate in Women\u2019s Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am humbled by, and it is an honor to receive the Brett \u201965 and Gwendolyn \u201964 Elliott Professorship for Interdisciplinary Studies,\u201d Shaw said. \u201cI only know how to think across and through disciplinary boundaries and it is clear that to address the most pressing questions of the 21st century, higher education will need to blend the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Allegheny, I have had the good fortune to teach incredible students, work alongside tremendous colleagues to build the Women\u2019s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, contribute to the Global Health Studies Program and the Black Studies Program,\u201d Shaw said, \u201cand write about the integration of women\u2019s studies and LGBTQ+ studies as I have come through the tenure process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Elliott Professorship will allow Shaw to spend more time mentoring and collaborating with students on research that analyzes the intersections of sexual and state violence in the Caribbean diaspora; to develop further two collaborative projects that have emerged from GLCA (Great Lakes Colleges Association) grants; and spend more time traveling to conferences with students and colleagues to discuss these works in progress before their publication, she said.<\/p>\n

The Elliotts, both Allegheny graduates, established the professorship as part of Allegheny\u2019s comprehensive fund-raising campaign, Our Allegheny: Our Third Century Quest<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor our nation to prosper, we need individuals well versed in the physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities,\u201d said Brett Elliott, an ophthalmologist. \u201cAllegheny has excellent curricula in these three critical categories, and we believe this professorship will prove valuable to students of all disciplines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to endowing the professorship, the Delaware couple established the Brett and Gwendolyn Elliott Faculty Support Fund that has helped fill the College\u2019s research and travel needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my pleasure to spend time recently with Brett and Gwendolyn Elliott when they were on campus and I look forward staying in touch with them as interdisciplinary work grows at Allegheny,\u201d Shaw said. \u201cI extend my sincere thanks to the Elliotts for their generous gift and Provost Ron Cole and President Jim Mullen for this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Associate Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Global Health Studies Sarah Conklin presented her research at the American Psychosomatic Society annual meeting held March 18-21 in Savannah, Georgia. Two students attended the conference with her. Nicole Masters \u201915 presented the results from her Senior Project conducted with Professor Conklin and Associate Professor of Psychology and Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Deb Dickey. Her project was titled \u201cExperiences of physical and emotional abuse are associated with blunted cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress.\u201d The project, currently under peer-review, was a multi-year effort. Her coauthors also attended the meeting: Annie T. Ginty \u201909, now at the University of Pittsburgh as a postdoctoral fellow in behavioral medicine; Eliza B. Nelson \u201912, now at the University of Saint Andrews School of Medicine, Health Psychology, UK; and Karen Kaye \u201914, now at Brandeis University, Psychology. Katelyn Nicewander \u201915 also presented the results of her Senior Project, which she conducted with Professor Conklin and Assistant Professor of Psychology Lydia Jackson. Her project was titled \u201cLavender essential oil aromatherapy does not reduce cardiovascular reactions to acute psychological stress in the laboratory: results from a preliminary randomized control trial.\u201d Katelyn\u2019s project is currently being prepared for peer review.<\/p>\n

Students Connect Science and Humanities through Interdisciplinary Research<\/em><\/h3>\n

Chris Schuchert \u201916 stood in a semi-dark room, arms outstretched, while Laura Holesh \u201916 snapped his photo.<\/p>\n

Leanne Siwicki \u201915 repeated the same pose, with Holesh capturing her image as well.<\/p>\n

Although the two theater majors looked as if they were practicing for an upcoming performance, they actually were serving as subjects for a psychological study. Holesh and Annie Utterback \u201916 are conducting this independent study with Associate Professor of Psychology Aimee Knupsky and Associate Professor of English M. Soledad Caballero.<\/p>\n

According to Utterback, a psychology major and women\u2019s, gender, and sexuality studies minor from Sewickley, Pa., the project came out of an interdisciplinary class she took last semester called \u201cCognitive Humanities \u2013 Expressions of Emotion: When Psychology and Literature Converge\u201d with Professors Knupsky and Caballero. The course was created through the support of a New Directions Grant from the Great Lakes Colleges Association.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe class was about the study of emotion during the 19th century to present day and the reciprocal relationship between science and the humanities,\u201d Utterback says. \u201cIt was about how the study of emotion was shaped by literature and theater and medical records. That provided a basis for our project, where Laura and I are studying facial recognition and emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

To conduct this research, Utterback and Holesh selected 20 poses from a manual on gesture and emotion written in 1806 by Henry Siddons, an English actor and theatrical manager now remembered as a writer on gesture. Each page in the book shows an actor making a gesture, with each page labeled with an emotion like \u201cdevotion,\u201d \u201chappiness,\u201d anger,\u201d \u201cdespair,\u201d or \u201centhusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Utterback and Holesh then asked theater majors Schuchert and Siwicki to recreate the gestures from Siddons\u2019 book while they took photos of each pose.<\/p>\n

The student researchers then will project the photos onto a screen and ask study participants to choose which emotion the actors are expressing. Utterback and Holesh will use equipment in the College\u2019s eye-tracking lab to study where participants are looking on the photos in order to make their guesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe eye-tracker will produce what is similar to a \u2018heat map,\u2019 allowing us to see where people are looking in the image and for how long,\u201d says Holesh, a neuroscience and psychology double major and biology minor from Gibsonia, Pa. \u201cThis will help us to capture their thought process to figure out what emotion it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll then be able to see if they\u2019re guessing the emotion that the book said it was and how that\u2019s been congruent over time. We\u2019ll also be able to see what part of the gesture is cuing them to the emotion,\u201d Utterback adds. \u201cIt will be interesting to see how emotion has developed over several centuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the unique components of this study is that it allows the students to conduct interdisciplinary research, meaning the study involves both science (psychology) and humanities (English and theater).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wave of the future is really interdisciplinary research, and Allegheny is leading the way by offering research with interdisciplinary courses,\u201d Professor Knupsky says. \u201cIt\u2019s about getting students to realize that humanities and natural sciences really are asking the same questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very interested in the sciences, but I\u2019m also interested in English and theater. So I really like the interdisciplinary focus,\u201d Utterback says. \u201cI like connecting all these subjects. It requires critical thinking and being creative to tie all these things together. It\u2019s been an eye-opening experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though the project is not yet complete, Holesh says she already has learned a lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project definitely has helped me to read scientific literature, analyze it, and see the process of thinking. The creative process also has helped me with my junior seminar,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe study has helped me to realize that psychology and science are a lot different than what I thought they were in high school,\u201d Utterback adds.\u201d Science is a study and a way of thinking more than content. You can scientifically study anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair also likes the ability to do hands-on research as an undergraduate student.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe other undergrads are doing research like we are and shaping it in the way we are. Laura and I are involved in shaping what the project is and what we\u2019re researching,\u201d Utterback says.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the main reasons I came to Allegheny was to do research, because I knew the opportunities were incredible. Coming in freshman year, I started doing research. At other schools, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the experience students get,\u201d Holesh adds.<\/p>\n

In addition, they appreciate the close relationships they have developed with professors at Allegheny.<\/p>\n

\u201cI truly value my relationships with my professors,\u201d Holesh says. \u201cI adore talking to them about their research. They are more than willing to have you come into the lab and see things and be hands-on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holesh and Utterback plan to continue their research next semester and may use this work as a springboard for their comprehensive projects.<\/p>\n

For generations of Allegheny singers, 2015 means more than the Bicentennial.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the 85th anniversary of the choir\u2019s existence.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the 50th anniversary of music program\/choir director founder Morten \u201cLuvy\u201d Luvaas\u2019 retirement.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s a choir reunion year, meaning all past and present members of the Allegheny choirs are invited back for a special celebration during Reunion Weekend at the end of May. Historically, the triennial choir reunions have drawn the largest group of attendees among any reunion group.<\/p>\n

For James Niblock \u201997, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, it\u2019s certainly exciting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very humbling to be in this position at such an exciting moment in Allegheny\u2019s history,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re going to premier a wonderful commission; I already have chosen the music for the upcoming choir reunion. There\u2019s so much to celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Kickoff to Remember<\/strong>
\nDuring the College\u2019s initial Bicentennial planning, Niblock began thinking about how the music program could contribute to the celebration. That\u2019s when he inquired about having a musical piece commissioned as part of the kickoff event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the Bicentennial Committee approved the idea, one of the first people I thought of asking was alumnus Crawford Thoburn,\u201d Niblock says. \u201cHis distinguished music career speaks for itself, and his family has a strong connection to Allegheny. It would be difficult to find someone who embodies that continuing connection to the institution as much as he does.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his time at the College, Crawford Thoburn \u201954 studied theory, arranging, and conducting with Luvaas and sang with the mixed choral group called the Allegheny Singers. He is now emeritus professor of music at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., where he served as Chair of the Arts Division and director of choral activities and taught voice, conducting, theory, composition, and music history.<\/p>\n

Throughout the years, he has published more than 100 choral compositions, arrangements, and editions, including those that Allegheny choirs past and present have sung. He also is a recipient of Allegheny\u2019s Gold Citation, in recognition and appreciation of the honor reflected upon the College by virtue of his professional achievements.<\/p>\n

But Thoburn\u2019s connection to the College goes beyond music; the Thoburn family legacy is a story all its own. More than 50 family members have attended Allegheny, starting with Thoburn\u2019s great-grandfather, James Mills Thoburn, Class of 1857. Crawford Thoburn is among the fourth generation, and two of his daughters are part of the fifth. And, of course, generation after generation has sung in the choir.<\/p>\n

So when Thoburn received the call from Niblock about commissioning the piece, he was touched.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough the Allegheny choirs have sung other choral works by me in the past, to be asked to write a piece celebrating the College’s Bicentennial is truly a special privilege and honor,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

After the call, he immediately knew where he would draw his inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cYears ago I did a successful setting of a text titled \u2018Wisdom Exalteth her Children\u2019 for women’s voices, and more recently I had intended to compose a new version for mixed voices. When Professor Niblock called about the Bicentennial, I knew this was the text I wanted to use,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s always held a special place in my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

And gives help to those who seek her.<\/em><\/p>\n

Whoever loves her loves life.<\/em><\/p>\n

And those who seek her early will be filled with joy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Whoever holds her fast will obtain glory.<\/em><\/p>\n

And God will bless the place she enters.<\/em><\/p>\n

After just a few months, Thoburn presented the composition to Niblock, who thought it would be appropriate for the College Choir to debut during a dinner celebrating the new Bicentennial Plaza in October.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe piece is a great sentiment for celebrating the longevity of an institution like Allegheny that is all about the pursuit of wisdom and embracing that in a joyful way,\u201d Niblock says.<\/p>\n

According to Thoburn, \u201cThe text, written about 180 BCE by the Hebrew sage Joshua ben Sira, is highly appropriate for celebrating the longevity of an institution like Allegheny, where faculty and students have shared the academic quest for so many years. It joyfully and eloquently expresses the continuing role of this experience at Allegheny, extolling the cultivation and acquisition of wisdom (as opposed to knowledge), which I believe is the true purpose of a liberal arts education.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked what certain lines of the piece mean to him, Niblock references the second line, \u201cand gives help to those who seek her,\u201d<\/em> and says, \u201cWhen you see students who have the light in their eyes to take on some new threshold in their discipline, to take on challenges, and they\u2019re anxious for you to lay those challenges down before them, that\u2019s a great example of what that line means.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he first shared the text with the Choir, Niblock was pleased with the members\u2019 response. The students are equally excited about performing the piece as part of the Bicentennial kickoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group was immediately upbeat and positive about the piece,\u201d Niblock says. \u201cSomething about the musical language is easy for them to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first day we sang the piece in rehearsal, I knew it was going to be great,\u201d says Rosey Sheridan \u201915, a choir member majoring in chemistry and minoring in music performance. \u201cThe year 2015 is my graduation year, so for me, the Bicentennial is something that has been talked about for four years. I feel very honored to be part of the event in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having the opportunity to sing in front of Thoburn is special for the students as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are nervous,\u201d admits Lauren Dominique \u201916, a choir member who is double-majoring in English and women\u2019s, gender and sexuality studies. \u201cWe sang one of Professor Thoburn\u2019s pieces last year, and it was probably one of my favorites. To sing this piece in front of him, to meet him in person, and just to be there for this occasion will be an incredible experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
