Fields of Specialization
Steve Onyeiwu is a tenured full Professor of Economics and the former Chair of the Department of Business & Economics. His fields of specialization include Development Economics, Innovation and Technology, International Political Economy, International Business and Heterodox Economics. He has taught a wide range of courses: Introduction to Micro and Macro Economics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Development Economics, Economics of Innovation & Technological Change, Industrial Economics, International Business, and Business Economics.
Research Interests
Professor Onyeiwu’s regional interests are Africa and the Middle East. He is also interested in local economic development issues and has published several articles and reports on the tooling and machining industry of Crawford and Erie Counties of northwestern Pennsylvania and serves as a resource person to the local tooling and machining enterprises, especially regarding strategies to contain competitive pressures from foreign firms.
Publications
He has undertaken research and presented scholarly papers in 34 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and North America. He has led students’ study tours to Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and India. He has published two books and over 50 articles in academic journals and edited books. His book, Contemporary Issues in African Economies,is used in many undergraduate and graduate economic development classes. Steve is a regular contributor to the popular media. His articles have appeared on CNN, US News and World Report, Business Insider, CNBC Africa, The Conversation, and several media outlets in Africa. He has been interviewed by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Fellowships
Professor Onyeiwu is a recipient of fellowships, including the Federal Government of Nigeria Scholar, British Airways Fellowship, Pew Charitable Trusts Research Fellowship, Pasold Research Fund, UK, University of Connecticut Fellowship, and the Social Science Research Council Fellowship. He has served as a consultant to international organizations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Addis Ababa, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Senegal and the International Institute of Administrative Sciences, Brussels. He received the Fulbright Scholar Award for a Visiting Professorship at Covenant University, Nigeria, during spring 2022.
Education, and Experience
Professor Stephen Onyeiwu received his PhD in Economics from the University of Connecticut, USA. He was a graduate student at Sussex University, UK, before moving to the USA to complete his doctoral studies. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt and Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, respectively. He has been a Professor of Economics and Business at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania since August 2001. Prior to coming to Allegheny, he was a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, a Visiting Fellow at Wesleyan University, USA and Visiting faculty positions at several U.S. universities, including Trinity College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, State University of New York at Albany, Union College, and Slippery Rock University. He was a Visiting Professor of Economics and Business on sabbatical leave at the O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonepat, India, as well as a visiting internship advisor at the Swami Vivekananda Institute of Indian Studies (SVIIS), Mysore, India.

He has held numerous leadership positions in academe, including Chair of the Department of Business and Economics at Allegheny College, Chair of the International Studies Program, Director of the Managerial Economics Program, Faculty Coordinator of the 3-2 Program with the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, Social Science Divisional Chair, the Andrew Wells Robertson Endowed Chair in Economics, Member of the Diversity and International Sub-Committee of the Middle States Accreditation Committee, Chair of the Meadville Sub-Committee of Allegheny College Strategic Planning Committee, Member of the Strategic Planning Committee, Chair of the Faculty Review Committee, Member of the Faculty Sub-Committee of the Presidential Search Committee, Institutional Mentor for Junior Faculty, and Member of the Meadville Medical Center Board of Cooperators.
