Artwork by Ian F. Thomas Reviewed in “Ceramics Monthly”

Ceramics and Sculpture Technician Ian F. Thomas had artwork reviewed in the international magazine Ceramics Monthly by author and critic Dr. Glen Brown. Thomas’s artwork was a finalist in the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics at the Zanesville Art Museum in Ohio. His work was one of fifty artworks that were chosen from more than 900 entries nationwide. He also has artwork in the Society for Contemporary Craft’s exhibition “Mindful: Exploring Mental Health through Art,” which is slated to travel for the next two years to museums and universities across the country. He also exhibited artwork in “Cup: The Intimate Object XI” at the Charlie Cummings Gallery in Gainesville, Florida. In addition, he had three written art reviews featured on eutopia.us, an online critical art website; presented a lecture on his research at Adrian College; and gave a technical workshop.

Exhibition of Senior Projects and Advanced Studio Projects Opens at Allegheny College

Dec. 1, 2015 – The Department of Art at Allegheny College will open the annual Senior Projects and Advanced Studio Projects Exhibition, “Being Made Whole,” with a public reception in the galleries on Tuesday, December 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. The show is an opportunity to showcase the work of graduating art majors and minors and upper-level art students.

Exhibiting in the gallery show are Allegheny students Rebecca Anderson, Allyson Bartlett, Elizabeth Blaschak, Andrea Brush, Emily Cancilla, Chelsea Fillippa, Kento Hashimoto, Doranny Jaime Abreu, Tianzhu Li, Jackson Magee, Brooke Osborne, Benjamin Tarcson and Paul Topor.

In addition to the public reception, the exhibit can be viewed through Sunday, December 13. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-4 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. The galleries are closed on Mondays.

The Art Galleries, which are wheelchair accessible, are located in Doane Hall of Art, east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville.

Faculty Serve As Artists in Residence at Research Station in the High Arctic

Assistant Professor of Art Byron Rich, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Heather Brand and Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science John Wenskovitch were selected as artists in residence at the prestigious Ars Bioarctica Residency, part of the University of Helsinki, at their biological research station in the high arctic of Finland. They spent two weeks exploring the ecology of this arctic region and producing work in response to their observations. In addition, Professors Rich, Brand and Wenskovitch presented their research at the 2016 meeting of the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Vancouver, Canada in August of 2015. They spoke about their collaborative work IMMOR(t)AL.

Art Journal Features Professor Rich in Issue Focusing on Influential Emerging International Artists

Assistant Professor of Art Byron Rich was selected as artist in residence at Pilotenkueche at the historic Spinnerei Arts Center in Leipzig, Germany, where he pursued his research between June and August of 2015. He was featured in a 23-page article in the art journal Art Habens for their summer issue focusing on influential emerging international artists. Professor Rich’s work is to be featured as part of Global Renaissance 2.0 in Karlsruhe, Germany at ZKM, New Media Institute between October and February. The work featured is an outgrowth of Protista Imperialis 1.0, which was finished in 2012.

“8 Hour Projects” at Allegheny College Art Galleries To Explore Themes of Place and Home

Aug. 24, 2015 — The Art Galleries of Allegheny College will present “8 Hour Projects,” curated by Heather Brand and Darren Lee Miller, on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free for this annual event, which this year features 10 artists making art on site with the public invited to observe–and participate if the artist chooses.

This year’s invited artists will consider themes of place and home for the Year of Meadville, a year of programming created by community and college partners. The artists are Justus Cotterill, Norman Cramer, Nima Dehghani, David Karl Leighty, Caldwell Linker, Alicia Marvan, Darren Lee Miller, Steve Prince, Byron Rich and M. Greg Singer. Each of the artists, who work with a variety of materials, has been assigned a wall or floor space of approximately 12 x 12 feet.

A panel discussion and opening reception for the show will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Art Galleries. Works will remain on display through Sunday, Sept. 20.

The exhibition is supported in part by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. The Art Galleries will be closed Sept. 6 and 7. Visitors are asked to call ahead to verify hours, since programs are subject to change. All events are free and open to the public.

Taking the stage

Being crowned Miss Crawford County launched Brianna Layman’s pageant career — and helped her choose a new professional one.

Layman, a 21-year-old rising senior at Allegheny College who will compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant starting today, was a member of the college’s pre-health club and likely headed to medical school after graduation.

But when a friend suggested she compete in the 2015 Miss Crawford County pageant, she needed to find a cause to support.

“I couldn’t put my finger on anything except my passion for art,” Layman said. “It’s very sad to me that programs for art and music and theater and drama have been substantially cut and devolved into very small programs.”

Layman now plans to graduate with a degree in biochemistry and enroll in a master’s program in fine arts. Ultimately, she wants to combine the two interests and work in the emerging field of bio art: The artistic representation of science and scientific research.

She spoke with the Erie Times-News about competition, the biggest misconception about pageants, and her ultimate goal.
