The Playshop Theatre’s 2021-2022 Season
Bikeman
by Thomas F. Flynn and directed by Mark Cosdon
Performance dates: September 10–12, 2021
In a series of extraordinary poems based on Dante’s “Inferno,” veteran CBS journalist Thomas Flynn documented his harrowing experiences on the morning of September 11, 2001. Quickly, he moved from being a reporter and neutral observer standing apart from the event, to a participant, survivor, and defining chronicler of 9/11. This theatrical staging of Flynn’s work commemorates the twentieth anniversary of that fateful day.
Bourbon at the Border
by Pearl Cleage and directed by Terrence Spivey
Performance dates: November 11–14, 2021
Howard University students May and Charlie joined hundreds of other Americans in Mississippi in the summer of 1964 for a voter registration drive. Years later, they are still searching for a way back from the damage that was done to them during that long ago “Freedom Summer.”
Proof
by David Auburn and directed by Mark Cosdon
Performance dates: February 24–27, 2022
Love, reconciliation, and the beauty of mathematics collide in David Auburn’s touching Pulitzer and Tony-winning drama. A brilliant play about family legacies, illness, and our potential to make peace with our past.
She Kills Monsters
by Qui Nguyen and directed by kt shorb
Performance dates: April 28–May 1, 2022
Qui Nguyen’s action-packed comedic drama follows a very average Agnes as she goes on a Dungeons & Dragons quest to make sense of the death of her little sister, Tilly. Monster melees, puppetry, fantasy cos-play, the 1990s, coming out stories, and mourning meet for this energetic yet moving show.
