Julie Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Communication Arts. She received her M.A. in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society and her Ph.D. in Communication Studies/Critical Media Studies, both from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Professor Wilson’s primary areas of expertise include critical media/cultural studies, celebrity and stardom, feminist media studies, and television studies. Her dissertation interrogated the increasingly high-profile role that stars like Angelina Jolie and Bono play in global governance. Professor Wilson’s work on the cultural powers of celebrity has been published in a number of journals including Velvet Light Trap, Celebrity Studies, Genders, and Television and New Media. She is currently working with Professor Emily Yochim on a book manuscript that examines how digital media culture is transforming motherhood.
While at Allegheny College, Professor Wilson has taught a variety of media courses, including Introduction to Critical Media Studies, Media Criticism, Media Institutions, Reality Television, and Digital Culture.
