Allegheny College Art Galleries To Present “8 Hour Projects”

Amaral Snow_1Aug. 26, 2013 — The art galleries of Allegheny College will present “8 Hour Projects” on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free for this annual event, when the public is invited to observe as 12 artists make art on site.

This year’s artists are Edith Abeyta, Matthew Conboy, Casey Droege, Corey Escoto, Andrea Sherrill Evans, April Flanders, Daniel Luchman, Patrick Schmidt, Becky Slemmons, Kirk Amaral Snow, Garett Yahn and Jennifer Yorke. They have been invited to use elements of performance in their artworks, using their own bodies, the bodies of others and systematized actions to create works of art.

Each of the artists, who work with a variety of materials, has been assigned a wall or floor space of approximately 12 x 12 feet.

“Work-in-Progress Day is always crowded, with people dropping in throughout the day to see how ideas evolve—over the course of eight hours—to become completed artworks,” said gallery director Darren Lee Miller, who serves as curator for the exhibit. “The event is appropriate for people of all ages and is especially fun for young, aspiring artists. It’s an opportunity not only to observe but also to participate if the artist so desires.”

An opening reception for the show will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Art Galleries. A panel discussion in Doane Hall A104 will precede the reception at 7 p.m. Works will remain on display through Sunday, Sept. 22.

The exhibition is supported in part by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. Visitors are asked to call ahead to verify hours, since programs are subject to change. All events are free and open to the public.

The Art Galleries, which are wheelchair accessible, are located in Doane Hall of Art, east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville.
