Allegheny College Chamber Singers To Present Annual Opera Scenes Program

April 29, 2014 – The Allegheny College Chamber Singers will present their annual opera scenes program at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, in the college’s Ford Chapel.

The singers will perform scenes from “Carmen,” “Dido and Aeneas,” “Bastien und Bastienne,” “The Merry Widow,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Die Fledermaus,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Lucia di Lammermoor.”

The program will open with the cigarette girls’ chorus from “Carmen,” followed by Lauren Dominique as the sorceress and Meredith Jester and Rose Sheridan as two witches from “Dido and Aeneas.”

Christopher Schuchert and Sara St. Peter will play Bastien and Bastienne, and Benjamin Kusserow will play the magical Colas. Tim Kaspick and Caitlyn Askey will dance and sing the Merry Widow Waltz.

When Hansel and Gretel, played by Hannah Phillips and Sara St. Peter, get lost in the woods, Meredith Jester as the Sleep Fairy puts them to sleep. Breana Gallagher and Chris Schuchert play a married couple at a masked ball in “Die Fledermaus.” Bailey Blashford as Madama Butterfly and Caitlyn Askey as her maid Suzuki decorate the stage with flowers and petals in the familiar Flower Duet.

Director of Choral Activities James Niblock will make a guest appearance as Lord Arturo Bucklaw in a chorus from “Lucia di Lammermoor.” Professor Emeritus of Music Ward Jamison will accompany the scenes on piano. Professor of Theatre Beth Watkins staged the scenes, and Instructor in Voice Vicki Jamison coached the music and will provide narration between scenes.
