Captain Michelle Rakers of the U.S. Marine Band To Conduct Band Camp Musicians in Free Gala Concert

June 25, 2014 — The Week 2 Concert Band of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College will perform a free gala concert on Friday, June 27 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Shafer Auditorium.

Returning as the conductor of the Concert Band is Captain Michelle Rakers, USMC, assistant director of the U.S. Marine Band (“The President’s Own”). Rakers joined the Marine Band in 1998 as a trumpeter/cornetist. She is both the first female assistant director and the first female commissioned officer in the history of “The President’s Own.”

The soloist for the Week 2 concert will be LeAnne Wistrom, who is principal flutist of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians as well as for the Erie Philharmonic and the Lake Erie Ballet Orchestra.

The program will be taken from the works that the Band Camp has been playing during the week. These include a mix of overtures, transcriptions, original works for band, lighter numbers and marches. Giuseppe Verdi, John Williams, Alfred Reed, Percy Grainger, Victor Herbert and John Philip Sousa are among the wide variety of composers represented.
