Katie_PopeAug. 7, 2014 – Catherine “Katie” Pope has been named Title IX coordinator at Allegheny College, a new full-time position in the office of the executive vice president. Pope will join Allegheny College from Purdue University, where she is Title IX deputy coordinator and managing director of the Butler Center for Leadership Excellence.

As Title IX coordinator at Allegheny College, Pope will have primary responsibility for ensuring institutional compliance with Title IX laws and regulations and will direct education, training and outreach programs related to Title IX. She will also monitor the development and implementation of the college’s discrimination and sexual harassment policy.

In addition, Pope will provide a long-term vision for compliance and community development that further enhances a safe and respectful environment that best supports the mission of Allegheny College as a residential liberal arts institution.

“Allegheny College is delighted to welcome Katie as our Title IX coordinator,” said Executive Vice President Sue Gaylor. “Katie is a leader who brings experience as an advocate and an administrator. Her knowledge of sexual violence issues combined with her collaborative approach and passion for making campuses a safe space for everyone will greatly benefit our community.”

Pope has broad experience working not only in higher education but in sexual violence and sexual harassment compliance training, education, advocacy and reporting. As Title IX deputy coordinator at Purdue, Pope works with partners across the university to coordinate education and reporting, chairs a committee focused on compliance and education efforts and works with departments to increase awareness of the Clery Act.

“I look forward to joining the Allegheny College community,” Pope said. “I’ve been very impressed at the commitment to Title IX and want to continue the good work already taking place.”

Before joining Purdue, she was executive director of the Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support in Ames, Iowa, and educational outreach and event coordinator for the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center in Ames.

Pope holds a B.A. in English from the University of Dayton and two master’s degrees: one in philanthropic studies from Indiana University and one in interdisciplinary studies from Iowa State University.

She and her husband, Bill Kannel, have two daughters.
