Senior Art Show Opens at Allegheny College

SAMSUNG CSCApril 13, 2015 – The Department of Art at Allegheny College will open the annual Senior Projects Exhibition in the Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries with a public reception in the galleries on Tuesday, April 21 from 7 to 8 p.m. The show is an opportunity for graduating Studio Art and Art & Technology majors to present to the public their works, which are the culminating experience of their art studies.

The Spring 2015 exhibition features the work of eight artists: Jaysa Alvarez, Natalie I. Bensel, Jasmine K. Davis, Ziania NarvaezGarcia, Brooke Osbourne, Joey Phelps, M. Greg Singer and Sachika Yamaguchi.

Jaysa Alvarez creates a multimedia installation to explore the role of the archive and how information is fractured through transmission and the passage of time. Natalie I. Bensel’s video art installation combines themes of shame and freedom that are often associated with sexuality.

Jasmine K. Davis bridges the gap between finality and timelessness with tactile works that reflect upon cycles of life and death. Ziania NarvaezGarcia’s mixed media works respond to four key policies that have impacted Mexican immigration in the U.S.: the Bracero Program, the Immigration Act of 1965, the Immigration and Control Act of 1986 and Operation Hold the Line.

Brooke Osbourne illustrates her spiritual journey with digital prints. Joey Phelps’ large acrylic paintings on canvas examine the social and environmental impacts of technological advancement. M. Greg Singer uses the inherently voyeuristic nature of photography to construct events and historical fictions that deal with modes of privacy, dependence and intimacy. Sachika Yamaguchi explores nature, tranquility and mindfulness.

In addition to the public reception, the exhibit can be viewed through Friday, May 8. Call 814-332-4365 for special hours during the exhibit. The Art Galleries are located in Doane Hall of Art, which is attached to the Campus Center on the Allegheny College campus, east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville. The Art Galleries are wheelchair accessible. All events are free to the public.
