Pelletier Library Lecture Focuses on “Mothering and Media in Precarious Times”

Oct. 21, 2015 – Professors Julie Wilson and Emily Yochim will present the 20th annual Pelletier Library Lecture at Allegheny College at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 in the Collaboratory, on the upper floor of the college’s Pelletier Library. Both the lecture, titled “Mothering and Media in Precarious Times,” and a reception to follow are free and open to the public.

Wilson and Yochim, who are on the communication arts faculty at Allegheny College, ask the questions “What does mothering look like in an era of uncertainty?” and “How do mothers hold together their families in a world that seems bent on pulling them apart?”

Drawing on extensive ethnographic research with mothers in Meadville and Erie area communities, Wilson and Yochim explore the everyday joys and challenges of contemporary motherhood, showing how mothers navigate increasing economic insecurity through engagements with digital media such as Pinterest, Facebook and couponing sites.

The lecture is part of the college’s Year of Meadville programming, a partnership between the college and the community that is focused on building a sustainable and just future. More information can be found at allegheny.edu/yearofmeadville.
