This years 2017 Fall award recipients are:

The Richard Kleeman Research Fund, an endowed fund, created in 1992 in recognition of Professor Kleeman’s 39 years of dedicated teaching at Allegheny College is designed to, (1) help defray the expenses of art-related travel and study, (2) help with the expenses of significant senior projects, and (3) help students meet studio or art historical research expenses for other ambitious work.

Award recipients are named in the Spring and Fall of each year by the faculty of the Art Department after proposals are submitted and reviewed on a competitive basis.

This years 2016 Fall award recipients are:

John Audley, Madeline Becker, Brennen French, Audrey Trotta and Madeleine Zimmerman.

This annual art event features about a dozen artists making art on site with the public invited to observe (and participate if the artist so desires). This year’s artists will consider how failure is essential for learning, personal and professional growth, and why failing (and the vulnerability it requires) is usually a feature of success. The artists are Heather Brand, Max Collins, Kristen 30, Hannah Epstein, Fotini Galanes, Trevor King, Kathryn Lien, Darren Lee Miller, Steve Prince, Byron Rich, Stacey Robinson, and Ian Thomas. This event is part of Allegheny College’s Year of Mindfulness. This exhibition is supported in part by the William Beazell Memorial Fund, the Allegheny College Art Department, and by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Tuesday, April 5th: At the opening reception of the Annual Student Art Show the Art Department faculty were pleased to announce the following awards:

This year’s juror Sean McConnor, Curator of Art and Painting Professor at Thiel College, awarded the Juror’s Prize for Best in Show to Elijah Prince, for his piece “D-PHI”.

Art Department Purchase Prizes went to Rebecca Anderson, Grace Blatchford, Stephanie Catalino, Brianna Layman, Melissa Lunz, Bryce Olson, Eliza Weisman, and Jonathan Yee.

The Exhibition, open to all Allegheny will be on view in the Art Department Bowman, Megahan and Penelec Galleries from April 5 through April 17, 2016. Additional student work can be seen in the adjacent hallways in the “Salon des Refusés.”

Through the generosity of the late Foster B. Doane, a former Allegheny trustee, awards in art are given annually as a result of a competition. The prizes in Painting and Drawing, Graphics, Sculpture or Ceramics, and Juror’s Prize will be presented on April 5, 2016, during the opening reception of the student art exhibition. All winners will receive a cash award and a book inscribed to indicate the nature of the award.

Entries are due on March 28th and 29th from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. No late entries will be accepted.

The Art Department announces the availability of funds to support significant work in studio art and art history. Monies are available through the Richard Kleeman Research Fund, an endowed fund created in 1992 in recognition of Professor Kleeman’s 39 years of dedicated teaching at Allegheny College. All current Allegheny College students who are interested in applying for money from the Richard Kleeman Research Fund are required to submit a written proposal to the chairperson of the Art Department on the form designed for that purpose. Proposals should describe the nature and scope of the project and must include a budget reflecting how funds will be used. Funds will be awarded on a competitive basis to: (1) help defray the expenses of art-related travel and study, (2) help with the expenses of significant senior projects, and (3) help students meet studio or art historical research expenses for other ambitious work. Further information and application forms may be obtained on the Art Department website under student resources, from department faculty or in the Art Department office. Proposals are due by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 for funding during the Spring semester. Completed applications should be submitted to Sherry Vardaro, Art Department Building Coordinator, Art Gallery, Doane Hall of Art. Funding requests should not exceed $350.00. Awards will be determined by the faculty of the Art Department. Award recipients will be notified by February 4, 2016.
