For Faculty & Staff

Faculty, coaches, professionals in student life, wellness, and academic support, student employee supervisors, mentors…. Students turn to you for guidance and direction about their futures, and that makes you key partners in the work of the CCPD.

We’re here to prepare students for their professional lives — and that means a lot more than reviewing resumes! Our staff can help students:

  • find their path and explore their options
  • discover exciting summer internships and secure financial support for them
  • structure their time at Allegheny to prepare them for what’s next
  • build a professional network
  • apply for nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships
  • present strong candidacies for graduate and professional school
  • craft internship and job application materials (including those resumes!)
  • prepare for internship and job interviews
  • and MORE!

Here’s what you can do:

Connect Students to Opportunities: You know your students best! Keep an eye out for our CCPD email newsletter to faculty and staff, and for the internships, jobs, and networking and professional development opportunities that we advertise around campus and on GatorHub. If you know a student who would be a good fit for an opportunity, encourage them. Your encouragement means everything to your students! Alumni often point to a mentor’s encouragement as the thing that pushed them to take a life-changing step.

Similarly, if you know a student who might be a strong candidate for a prestigious nationally competitive opportunity, encourage them to apply, and refer them to the CCPD for support in the process!

Refer Students: To refer a student to us, you can help them set up an appointment on Handshake.

To Schedule An Appointment In Handshake:

  1. Log into your Handshake account, and click on the Career Center tab. You can access that link through GatorHub or https://allegheny.joinhandshake.com/edu.
  2. Once on the page, click “appointments”—-> “schedule a new appointment” —-> select “current students” for the category and follow the prompts.
  3. Select a time slot and an appointment topic (make sure to pay attention to the class years listed at the end of the topic).

Help Students Build a Network: As students get to know you, you can help them connect with others in your field. Sign up for Gator2Gator to connect with alumni and current students, and help connect them to each other. If you use LinkedIn, you can also help students network outside of the Allegheny community there.

Showcase Career Readiness: Everything you do with students helps them be ready for a career — they just might not know it.

Here are some tools for showcasing career readiness in classes and in study away (adaptable to other activities too!) and here are some resources connecting career readiness and undergraduate research.

Ask the “Big Questions” with Career in Mind: A liberal arts education is about learning to ask and answer “big questions,” about ourselves and the world, and this is also true as we help students think about their careers — we can help them build a meaningful life, not just make a living.

Allegheny is a member of the Council of Independent Colleges’ NetVUE (Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education) which provides a wealth of resources to help educators support students as they work through those “big questions” about the work they will embark on after graduation.
