Biographical Information

Jon Wiebel, Assistant Professor of Communication Arts and the Director of Speaking, has a B.A. in Political Science from Baylor University, a M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa.

Wiebel’s primary areas of interest are rhetoric, critical and cultural theory, political communication, and argumentation and debate. His research focuses on late twentieth and early twenty-first century U.S. immigration policy with a particular interest in the U.S.-Mexico border. He is currently exploring how the concept of hospitality is deployed to influence the formation of immigration policy.

Wiebel’s past and present courses include: Foundations of Rhetoric and Public Communication, Power, Politics and Communication, Rhetoric and Civic Engagement, Advanced Public Speaking and topics courses centered on video games. As the Director of Speaking he oversees the hiring and mentoring of peer speaking consultants.
