ROLE TITLE:  Instructional Design & Scholarly Communications Librarian

POSITION REPORTS TO:  Dean of the Library

Summary of Position

The Instructional Design & Scholarly Communications Librarian will provide leadership and coordination of instructional design concepts in all courses, focusing on the instructional needs of the campus community, supporting faculty, student-facing staff, and students. They will actively lead, support, promote, and troubleshoot instructional media and educational technology. They will develop and support scholarly publishing initiatives, including copyright, fair use, open access, and research.

As the Instructional Design & Scholarly Communications Librarian, you will:

  • Collaborate with the Dean of the Library, the Director of Faculty Development, and the Center for Research and Teaching Excellence (CREATE) team to develop programming and outreach to support faculty and staff in developing the structural framework of courses, course syllabi, assessments, activities, and multimedia for new and existing courses that meet the standards of excellence of Allegheny College.
  • Support LMS activities and assist with troubleshooting LMS issues in coordination with the Lead Canvas Administrator, Canvas Team, and Dean of the Library, including: adding faculty to Canvas tutorial and sandbox course; building and editing blueprint courses and other non curricular courses as appropriate; providing solutions to faculty, students, and the larger campus community with questions.
  • Analyze usability of software and other educational technology that enhances a student-centered approach; make recommendations for instructional solutions based on a firm knowledge of a variety of online pedagogical strategies and teaching tools; serve as the liaison between faculty, Dean of the Library, and Information Technology to implement changes as needed.
  • Coordinate and build scholarly publishing initiatives in collaboration with the Dean of the Library and the Director of Faculty Development.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with and provide outreach and education to faculty and student-facing staff to facilitate and support publishing and research.
  • Serve as a resource and liaison for copyright, fair use, and intellectual property related to course content and publishing for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assist faculty in navigating publishing options and copyright and licensing agreements related to scholarly output, upon request.
  • Participate in research support, information literacy efforts, and library instruction sessions and classes as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s preferred
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree or a Master’s degree in Instructional Design or a Master’s degree or higher with relevant experience with instructional design and/or OER development
  • Post graduate certificate or degree in Instructional Design or Instructional Technology preferred
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, Quality Matters framework, Bloom’s Taxonomy, online pedagogical strategies, ADDIE model, and other educational tools
  • Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy, instructional design, and distributed learning
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty to assist with the design of a wide variety of high-quality courses
  • Knowledge of Open Access publishing, publishing platforms like PressBooks, and Read & Publish agreements
  • Knowledge and coordination of institutional repository workflows with faculty publishing 
  • Experience with handling copyright, fair use, and intellectual property issues in an academic environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work independently
  • Excellent communication/organizational/interpersonal skills to successfully collaborate in a team-based, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

YOUR COMPENSATION 

New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

The expected starting salary range for this position is $55-60,000 annually. This position is full-time, exempt.
