“Reboot” Fundraising Campaign Supports Computer Science Opportunities for Allegheny College Students
As part of Allegheny College’s participation in GivingTuesday, the Computer and Information Science Department has launched the “Reboot” campaign to celebrate a change in names as well as new majors within the department. The fundraiser is part of the College’s annual GivingTuesday initiative in collaboration with the global movement of profound generosity, which takes place every year on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
Members of Allegheny’s Technical Advisory Board have promised to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $7,500, with an overall goal of $15,000 in funds that would help support 12 computer science students. Funds will be allocated toward the development of open-source software, which will be made available as an online resource for teaching computer science to high school students. The first 150 donors will also receive a limited-edition Alden Hall sticker.
“This year we are focusing on providing opportunities to our current students to work with faculty to design, implement, and deploy online educational software platforms geared toward high school students,” said Janyl Jumadinova, Chair of the Computer and Information Science Department.
Founded in 1979, the Department of Computer Science at Allegheny College offers hands-on experience in the design, development, and implementation of software systems and technologies. Fundraising campaigns like GivingTuesday are essential to the department’s ability to strengthen opportunities for current and incoming students to become leaders in the field.
“This will help the department continue to lead computer and information science education in liberal arts, and select students in all four majors and minors will receive an opportunity to enhance their curricular path in their major or a minor that also benefits the broader community,” Jumadinova said.
The campus-wide fundraising campaign allows alumni and donors to support specific department projects, as well as provides a direct impact to students by creating immediate and tangible opportunities and outcomes. This year’s “Reboot” campaign commemorates two new programs within the department including data science and informatics, as well as two new majors and minors in software engineering and computer science.
Donations may be made through the department’s fundraiser page, or donors may call toll-free at 1-866-332-3853 between 8 am – 5 pm EST to make a gift over the phone.
