Nov. 20, 2012 – Donald Harward, editor of the book “Transforming Undergraduate Education: Theory that Compels and Practices that Succeed,” will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Tillotson Room at the Tippie Alumni Center at Allegheny College. The public is invited to this free talk.

Harward’s visit to Allegheny is part of the college’s Year of Transforming Education, an exploration of the inequalities inherent in American education, the future of the U.S. public education system and the value of liberal arts education.

Harward is the director of the Bringing Theory to Practice Project of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). A Senior Fellow with AAC&U, he serves as a consultant for the Center for Liberal Education and Civic Engagement, a joint project of AAC&U and Campus Compact.

President of Bates College from 1989 through June 2002, when he was appointed president emeritus, Harward holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Maryland.

Before taking office at Bates, he served as vice president for academic affairs at the College of Wooster. He has also taught at the University of Delaware, where he designed and led the university honors program.

His presentation at Allegheny is co-sponsored by the William Beazell Memorial Fund, the Office of the Provost and the Allegheny College Center for Experiential Learning (ACCEL).
