Funding Opportunities for Student Research

Harold M. State Research Fellowship

This fund was established in honor of Professor Harold M. State, Emeritus of the Department of Chemistry, by an appreciative student, Harry E. Bonner, Class of 1956. It is awarded annually to third year students majoring in any one of the natural science departments.

The award may be used to support student summer research and research conducted during the academic year in collaboration with a faculty member. It may also be used for supplies, materials, and other expenses related to the research project. Monies may support travel for the student and his or her faculty member to conduct research or present research findings.

Students should send a brief proposal of their research project to the Dean of the College along with a supporting memo from the faculty member involved. The proposal should indicate whether they are receiving funding from other sources (department, faculty grants, etc.), and it should include a budget.

A committee comprised of science department chairs and either the Dean of the College or the Associate Dean will consider the research proposals and determine the award recipient(s). The State Fellow will be selected in the spring semester; the award will be formally announced at the annual Honors Convocation. The application deadline is March 1.

Professor Louis Jefferson Long Student-Faculty Research Fund

This is an endowed fund established by Harry W. Shepard, Class of 1942, and his wife Patricia, in memory of Dr. Jeff Long, Professor of Economics at Allegheny from 1935 to 1951 and Treasurer of the College during his last decade of service.

Support is provided for collaborative student/faculty research in all disciplines. The fund will support a wide range of collaborative research activity, including but not limited to: senior projects, purchase of equipment needed for special projects, student-faculty travel to symposia or workshops, summer research efforts, support for ACCEL Travel Seminars, etc. Awards will be made by the Dean of the College (no deadline).

The proposal should indicate whether they are receiving funding from other sources (department, faculty grants, etc.), and it should include a budget. The Dean’s office will act on the request as soon as all of the requested information is received.

Class of 1939 Senior Research Fund

This fund was established by the Class of 1939 on the occasion of its 50th reunion. The income from this fund shall be used to support student research in all departments in conjunction with the senior project.

Students should send a brief proposal of their senior project to the Dean of the College along with a supporting memo from the senior project advisor. The proposal should indicate whether they are receiving funding from other sources (department, ACCEL, ASG), and it should include a budget. The Dean’s office will act on the request as soon as all o9f the requested information is received (no deadline).

Shanbrom Research Fund

The Shanbrom Research Fund was established by Dr. Edward Shanbrom, Class of 1947, and his wife, Helen, to support student/faculty research. Dr. Shanbrom is a medical inventor who has made significant contributions to AIDS and hepatitis research.

The fund is used to support student research done in a collaboration with a faculty member in any department. The fund will support a wide range of collaborative research activity, equipment purchases, and research publication assistance. Travel is excluded.

Wells Foundation Student/Faculty Research Fund

This fund was established by the Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation to support collaborative research opportunities in the Natural Science Dividion.

Students should send a brief proposal of their research project to the Dean of the College along with a supporting memo from the faculty member involved. The proposal should indicate whether they are receiving funding from other sources (department, faculty grats, etc.), and it should include a budget. The Dean’s office will make the awards (no deadline).

James F. Sheridan, Jr. Memorial Fund

This fund was established by Dr. Sheridan’s wife, Nancy, and other family and friends in memory of Jim Sheridan, Class of 1950 and Professor of Philosophy at Allegheny from 1965 to 1994. The income from this fund is used to provide financial assistance to access educational resources for students working on interdisciplinary senior projects in which Philosophy is one of the disciplines. Recipients are selected through the Dean of the College in consultation with the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
