Why are we doing another survey?
COACHE is a survey designed specifically for faculty in higher education. It addresses many topics–like shared governance–that simply will not appear on generic job satisfaction surveys. It also provides cross-institutional comparison and benchmarks that will help all of us understand the results in a broader framework.
Who is taking the survey?
COACHE is limited to full-time faculty who are not in their first year at the institution and are not in their last year after not receiving tenure. This is a requirement of the survey itself, to enable cross-institutional comparison.
What is the survey going to cover?
COACHE attempts to measure ‘job satisfaction’–which is a very broad concept. It includes questions on themes like the perceptions of collegiality, shared governance, resources and support available, institutional leadership, quality of the facilities, diversity of the institution, quality of life, etc. If you would like to review the sample survey before starting, you can do so here.
Is this approved by IRB?
Yes – COACHE is run by Harvard Graduate School, and is approved by their IRB.
Is anything going to change after this survey?
COACHE is intentionally designed to be a 3-year project to ensure that there is adequate time for reflecting on the survey results and creating action plans (year 2) and implementing those recommendations and changes (year 3). While no one can predict exactly what the results will show, we are certain that the process of reflecting and recommending changes will be faculty-led.
How long will the survey take?
About 40 minutes. But you can stop and pick it up again at any time.
Do you have any examples of how COACHE has been used at other institutions?
Sure!
Is there a sample survey I can review?
