Research Interests
Breaking our dependence on fossil fuel-based energy sources is an urgent objective to mitigate the effects of climate change. One high-impact area of chemical research towards this goal is the development of sustainable chemical syntheses which avoid inefficiencies of heat or sacrificial reagents. The most promising green reagent is sunlight, as it is effectively free and produces no waste. Students working in the Shepard Lab focus on harnessing solar energy for photochemical transformations studied through the lens of physical chemistry. Our researchers develop expertise in the spectroscopic experiments that uncover the mechanism by which these chemical reactions occur through the use of UV-Vis, NMR, fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopies.
