Service Disruption

Scheduled Network Maintenance for Wednesday, July 31st

Network maintenance is scheduled to occur between the hours of 4:00 to 6:00 pm Wednesday, July 31st.

During this time frame, Mitel desk phones will reboot, and should come back online in under two minutes. During this reboot, any computer connected to our wired network through a desk phone will experience a brief loss of connectivity to our network. Connectivity should be restored for each computer once the desk phone that it is connected to comes back online.

If users experience outages that last longer than a few minutes, please call the InfoDesk at x3768, or email infodesk@allegheny.edu.

Mac connectivity

As part of ongoing network maintenance, LITS will be tweaking some network settings in each building over the coming weeks. For some Mac users on campus, this will affect their ability to connect to the network if they’re using a wired connection.

We have shared step-by-step instructions with building coordinators, which Mac users can follow to reconnect to the network if they are affected.

As always, please contact the InfoDesk at x3768 with any questions.

Brief Internet Outage in Henderson Campus Center and Caflisch Hall

Early in the morning of Friday, June 21, a power outage caused by weather may have disrupted Internet connectivity in two buildings on campus. LITS staff have corrected the issue in Henderson Campus Center, and will be working on switches in Caflisch to restore service there as well.

We will update this post as more information becomes available.

Google Calendar outage

LITS has received reports of an issue with Google Calendar. Google is aware of the issue and is investigating. We will provide more information shortly. The affected users are unable to access Google Calendar and get a “Not Found
Error 404” message instead.

UPDATE: At approximately 1:15 on 6/18/219, Google posted an update: “We expect to resolve the problem affecting a majority of users of Google Calendar at June 18, 2019 10:40:00 AM PDT. Please note that this time frame is an estimate and may change. The affected users are unable to access Google Calendar.”

LITS will continue to monitor and will update this post as needed.

Gmail Experiencing Delays

As of about 1 p.m. on Monday, June 17th, Gmail users started reporting delays in receiving email. This issue is affecting all Gmail users, including Allegheny College’s @allegheny.edu email. Google is aware of the issue.

LITS is monitoring Google for updates and will update this post as we learn more. We appreciate all who have notified us of the issue.

UPDATE from Google at approximately 2:40 p.m.: “Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”

UPDATE from Google at approximately 3:15 p.m.: “The problem with Gmail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.
Affected messages will be retried and delivered with additional delays.”

Upcoming Network Maintenance

Network maintenance during the week of 6/11 may cause a brief disconnect from the internet for campus laptops on the wireless network.

If you are experiencing connectivity issues that persist longer than a few minutes, please contact the InfoDesk.

Google Chrome display bug

LITS is receiving some reports of fonts not displaying correctly on some Windows 7 computers in Chrome.

This is most likely related to a Chrome update released yesterday by Google. For the time being, the best available workaround is to use Firefox instead.

We are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
