“Data”, at its most basic level, is information. As we make no attempt to govern all information in use at Allegheny, we restrict the scope of ‘Data’ for this document to information that can be used to research the institution. Data that is collected as a part of research conducted by the faculty for academic purposes is explicitly excluded from the scope of this document.
Data in the scope of this document includes, but is not limited to:
- Records of activity in institutionally-sponsored activities, both academic and non-academic for students, faculty and staff
- Financial information
- Records of interaction with our digital presence, including engagement metrics of the website, communications and social media
- Qualitative responses to prompts
- Data collected for as part of external grants related to institutional improvement
Any data or information that is specifically covered by their own legal requirements:
- Personnel evaluations for staff, which are governed by their own protocols.
- Faculty tenure and promotion materials, which are governed by their own protocols.
- Any counseling notes or records covered by HIPAA.
- Parts of the FAFSA that are explicitly covered by federal law.
- Crime reporting mandated by the Clery Act.
