MEADVILLE, Pa. – Nov. 10, 2010 – David Paterson, president and chief executive officer of AbitibiBowater, the world’s eighth largest publicly traded pulp and paper manufacturer, will serve as executive in residence at Allegheny College Nov. 14-17.

“I very much look forward to serving as this year’s Executive in Residence at Allegheny College’s managerial economics program. With a daughter in her senior year at the College, I have had the privilege of viewing first-hand the academic rigor and creativity of this fine institution. Participating in a wide variety of classes, working one-on-one with students and meeting with members of the broader business community will provide an opportunity for all of us to engage in candid dialogue and share experiences,” stated David J. Paterson.

“I applaud the College’s interdisciplinary approach to understanding business issues in the global marketplace,” added Paterson.

The executive-in-residence program is part of Allegheny’s managerial economics program, which was established in 2001 to offer management and business education in a liberal arts context. Executives in residence spend a short period of time at Allegheny teaching economics, management and business courses. They also mentor students, deliver a lecture to the campus community and meet with members of the local business community to share ideas about contemporary economic and business issues.

“The Executive in Residence program has enabled our students to have better perspectives on how the tools of economics and management are applied in the real business world,” said Steve Onyeiwu, associate professor of economics at Allegheny College and co-chair of the college’s managerial economics program.

“As a result of the program, students come to understand that economics is not just about formulating abstract theories and building models; it is also about solving contemporary economic and business problems,” Onyeiwu said.

Prior to the merger of Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Incorporated in 2007, Paterson was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Bowater Incorporated. He came to Bowater from Georgia-Pacific Corporation where he was most recently executive vice president in charge of its building products division. Previously Paterson worked for Southwest Forest Industries and Continental Forest Industries. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and a master’s in business administration from the University of Michigan.
